Frustrated with how often my student break their expensive double reeds, I tried a few of these out and now recommend them as an alternative. Not a great sound, but I'm not too concerned with that in my beginning band classes. By the time they reach their second year, they have learned how to protect their reed and switch to others (hopefully).
If anyone is starting oboe players in elementary school, these reeds are great. They are much more durable than the wooden reeds, which most 4th graders destroy in about 3 days. Sure, the sound isn't the most beautiful you can get, but at a beginner stage where you are just working on fingerings, embouchure, and all that fun stuff, the plastics hold up much better and avoid much of the frustration that wooden reeds can cause early on.
This reed is very useful for practicing for a long time when pitch and tone aren't the most important thing. I use it for the first few days working on a song, just to get the rhythm and basics down, then switch to another reed to practice tuning and tone. It holds up well, and if you can stand the sound of a duck for a while, you won't have too much trouble.
This is a great read for beginners and infrequent players. As a piano education major in college, I was required to take a woodwinds methods class. The teacher recommended that I get one of these because they're easier to make an initial sound on it and it'll pretty much last forever as long as you don't damage it. It has lasted me the last couple years and is great for me because I don't play very often.
