Having begun playing bassoon in December, I have already exceeded the senior bassoonist at our school in playing ability. when I first began to play, I ordered 3 Jones reeds and 3 Woodwind reeds. I believe Jones reeds give a haunting, very smooth tone. With Woodwind reeds this is not the case, but I will still continue to buy them for one important reason. MARCHES! Every bassoonist knows that in concert marches, they may as well not play because they're NEVER going to be heard over the whole band. However, this reed may even the playing field in a big way. These reeds have a very biting tone, and they are, while more coarse in the general feel of the sound they produce, still easy to control and tune with, especially if you can have your director or a private instuctor shave them to your specifications. I find I can play about as loud as a baritone or trombone playing mf-f on this reed at it's loudest, while I'm comparitively about an mp dynamic on a Jones reed. This reed serves a definate purpose in my playing and I will rely on it, if not for a smooth and controlled solo, than to match the tuba in it's ferocity and umph(!) in concert marches for years to come.
