This suite in seven parts is composed for a 'classic' flute and a 'jazz' piano. It was the first jazz recording of world-renowned flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and Claude Bolling. It is possible to play the whole piece with only flute and piano, but bass and drum parts are included for the complete Suite.
No composer likes to write music without feeling that an artist exists both capable of, and willing to, play it to good advantage. When Carl Maria von Weber met Heinrich Joseph Baermann, one of the greatest clarinetists of the early nineteenth century, he delightedly began writing all sorts of work for him, including several chamber pieces and the two famous clarinet concerti. In his F-minor Concerto No. 1, it is clear that Weber knew the virtuosity of his player--he makes the soloist range over the entire compass of his instrument, and such quiet moments as do occur are invariably surrounded
Mozart did not make extensive use of the clarinet until comparatively late in his career, but he wrote exquisitely for the instrument, and the two scores dedicated to his friend, Anton Stadlerthe Quintet, KV581 and the Concerto, KV622are among his most beautiful works. Both, incidentally, belong to the final year of his life. The Clarinet Concerto is in the conventional three movements, with music that transcends conventionality in its remarkable sense of repose and serenity, and what Bernhard Paumgartner has called 'its incredible warmth of tone, perfect balance and unmatched perfection of st

Written for his friend and fellow Mason in Vienna, Anton Stadler, the quintet was completed in September of 1789 and premiered a few days before Christmas of that year. It is one of Mozart's most perfect accomplishments--a score of proud serenity, transparent texture and radiant beauty.
Ludwig Spohr, who created quite a stir when he began conducting with an odd contraption known as a baton, was also one of the best known violinists of his day (i.e., the first half of the nineteenth century), and is primarily known today for his concerti and other solo works for the fiddle. That he was also quite adept at writing for other instruments than his own is proved by this C-minor Clarinet Concerto, his first of four such works, and a composition high on wit and solid craftsmanship.

And so was born a new style of Dixieland jazz minus the banjos, tubas, steamboats and magnolias! It is this version we celebrate on this album. We encourage you, the soloist, to invent
