I'm my school's first chair euphonium who took up trombone as a secondary and jazz instrument this past school year. When I started playing trombone I was using a less than stellar school owned mouthpiece. I bought a Yamaha euphonium from a former teacher last October and I got two mouthpieces. One was this mouthpiece, a Yamaha 51D. After experimenting with the mouthpieces available to me, I determined this mouthpiece was best for my overall trombone playing, and I've had some amazing orchestral, jazz, and show choir band performances on this mouthpiece. I highly recommend this mouthpiece for any euphonium player who is learning trombone, no matter what style you're playing. I trust this mouthpiece enough that I've solo'd with it at prestigious jazz clubs, and I'll soon be performing on it with the Buckeye All-Star Band at a DCI show, playing the National Anthem.
The Yamaha 48 (small shank) comes standard with the Yamaha YEP-321 Euphonium. The piece is rather small and won't give you that deep, dark euphonium sound. Don't get me wrong, the mouthpiece is made with very high quality and would be great for a beginner or someone that wants that bright sound or have the ability for a higher range. I just wouldn't use the mouthpiece for euphonium if you are an experienced player. I've actually considered finding a larger Yamaha mouthpiece that would be similar to a Bach 5g or schilike 51D because from my own experience, I like the feel of the mouthpiece. It has a soft touch and is rounded beautifully. Another up side is that it is on the cheaper side because they are mass produced. I wouldn't over look these mouthpieces.
As it came with a new Yamaha Yep-321, i thought it would be worse than my current mouthpiece a Vincent Bach 6 1/2 AL, However, i was really surprised to find that it exceeded my expectations and my own mouthpiece. Attacks are alot easier, range is better, and tone quality overall is superb. Although truly only meant for beginners and maybe intermediate players, it's definitely and excellent alternative to the Vincent Bach 6 1/2 AL
I recently acquired a baritone in order to fill out the low brass section of an ensemble. Because I?ve been a trumpet player for 33 years, I found that the mouthpiece that came with the baritone (a Jupiter 10SB) had a deep cup which made the transition from trumpet more difficult. The Yamaha 45C2 has a shallower cup, enabling me to achieve a greater range and clearer tone and better regulate my breath. WWBW shipped it very quickly by USPS for free and I?ve been very happy with the quality of the mouthpiece.
