First the good...Fine workmanship. Great valves, Does everything I want it to. Great for quintet and dixieland. Don't have to pull alides at all. Been playing tuba for around 40 years. Have played in various venues from community bands, orchestras and pit orchestras. Now for the bad. I need two sousaphone bits to get this thing in tune. Even after I pull slides out as much a possible. Tried it a couple of times in a smaller orchestra. It just got swallowed up. Not enough guts . It's a fun horn to play, but after ltalking to other players....one thing is in common with us all. It's too sharp. I've tried mouthpeices, big and small, Helebergs and Giebs. It doesnt matter. This baby is just too sharp.
As I was getting my Miraphone repaired, I waited in a music store and decided to try a few horns. I sat down to play and this huge sound came out of this tiny horn. I play dixie, jazz & my share of brass quintets and I realized the flexability and smoothness of this horn was going to work for me. That day, after the repair job was done, I traded the horn in and bought the Yamaha YBB 621. I have had this horn for 15 years now and play it often in NYC clubs recordings. When I find something better for me, I will let you know.
Man this BAT rocks. This is a small tuba. I am 5 foot 9 and I almost have to set something on my lap to hold it up high enough. Due to its small bore you can push the air really fast and get a huge sound. It does tend to sound a little harsh on low notes if you?re not careful. The valves are basically Gods gift to man. They are smooth and move amazingly fast. The only thing that happened with them is that my ivory fell out of one of them. But a little glue solved that. The high notes come out with great ease too. It?s easy to why the Canadian brass tuba player plays on this.
