Yamaha YBB-641 Professional Rotary TubaThe 641 offers the player a sound that is reminiscent of the best European tuba makers. The Yamaha YBB641 Series 4 Valve 4/4 BBb Tuba is a fine instrument built in the German tradition and modeled after the early Meinl Weston models. This tuba features a .812" bore with 4 rotary valves designed for superior sound and excellent valve action. This tuba is well suited for any type of playing. The Yamaha YBB641 Series 4 Valve 4/4 BBb Tuba includes a case and mouthpiece and is available in lacquer (YBB-641) finish. The Yamaha YBB-641 has a traditional German sound with a tubing wrap reminiscent of the early Meinl Weston instruments, the long leadpipe and bell of a Miraphones and the resonance of a Cerveny. This horn is a well blended combination that has a voice all its own. All Yamaha wind instruments carry a limited 5-Year warranty.Hand-Lapped Rotary ValvesHand-lapped valves involves a time-consuming finishing process which results in superior valve fit for noiseless, responsive action and easy tone changes.Hand-Lapped SlidesHand-lapped slides achieves the perfect balance between air tightness and smooth action.Nickel-Silver Spatula KeysCarefully positioned nickel-silver spatula keys are strong and are capable of comfortable fast fingering.Ball Joints for Rotary Valve LeversThe Yamaha-developed ball joints for the rotary valve levers are durable, yet achieve silent operation and light action.LeadpipeThe long leadpipe contributes to a beautiful, dark, smooth tone which blends well with other instruments.Tuning Slide PositionThe careful positioning of the tuning slide makes it easier to adjust the slides while playing.

Choose from the folowing Yamaha Warranties:
I've played 2 different 641s now and both times I've been disappointed. On both horns, the entire bell rings after I play an Eb (in and just below the staff). It is quite obnoxious. It ruins the response on any note following an Eb because you have to overcome the continuing vibrations in the bell to change notes. It doesn't ring like that on any other note, but every Eb you play will have you fighting for the next note. The horn is fairly free blowing and generally has a big sound, but the response is not nearly as tight as any miraphone I've played. The couplings/connections between the rotors and the valve "lever" seems like they cut corners and copied a generic rotary valve design. They don't feel solid or even compare to a real German tuba. If you are a high schooler, this is a good intermediate tuba, but this is no "professional" tuba. It is way overpriced and you could get a comparable tuba for half the price, or a real, well made tuba for the price of this horn.
I play this tuba in my band and it is ok... it is a step up from the baby tubas... you know the little 3 piston valve switched bell side things... The volume is what makes this a good tuba; it plays VERY loud when you want it to. The 4th valve can be a bit of a problem sometimes because it changes tune dramatically with the weather so I recommend playing your Cs and low Fs with the 1-3 combination. The 4th valve will also stick in cold weather even though it?s a rotary valve so that another reason to substitute it often with 1-3.
This is a lovely horn. I love it.
This horn truly is an exceptional instrument. The 641 is superior to its miraphone counterpart, in both sound, (this is darker) and has a much smoother lighter action with the rotary valves. Anyone that would choose a mirapone over this is a fool. I use the Yamaha YBB 641 in both orchestral settings as well as band, its a one of a kind very versatle instrument. I ENCOURAGE all my students to get their hands on one! Definately worth the money! If its out of your price range the Miraphone equillivent is ok, but it has more resistance, and I feel its not as responsive. Older Miraphones are ok, I prefer those over the miraphones being sold now!
Tuba's are expensive, and well Yamaha's 641 is pricey! But you get a tuba that will perform and perform. This tuba is built like a tank. It can take the hardships with grace compared to a Miraphone. It plays very well for a tuba in the semi-professional level. It does nothing really extrodinary for a tuba, but it will play in tune. Sound is generic no real awesome overtones like other pro tubas but then again it really does not have any bad notes. For a player who plans on using one horn for school, college, or recreation it really cannot be beat. It also has readily available parts and is made very... very well. If taken decent care of will last lifetimes of steady use.
