The Yamaha YBS-52 is Yamaha’s intermediate baritone saxophone. It is introductory to the Yamaha line, but since very few saxophonists start on baritone, Yamaha’s least expensive model has features common to intermediate instruments. It is the most popular baritone saxophone at WWBW for school accounts.
The YBS-52 is a quality instrument that is built student-tough. It combines Yamaha’s production expertise with design aspects of Yamaha professional saxophones, and is known for its response, intonation and big, bold tone. The YTS-52 is a superior instrument for anchoring a large horn section or holding down the woodwind’s bottom end on the marching field.
The YBS-52 features a yellow brass body, neck, bell and key material. It has polyester key buttons, nickel-plated keys and a gold or silver lacquer finish. Waterproof leather and wool felt pads with plastic tone boosters, a front F key, and drawn tone holes round out the professional feature set. The left-hand pinky key’s position, height, angle and shape have all been redesigned for comfort and response. Adjustable key guard felts offer optimum venting and intonation, and tapered pivot screws make for smooth key action.
The YBS-52 is designed for the concert stage or for the marching field. It is the most popular school baritone and so it often finds itself in outdoor environments. Although fairly lightweight and maneuverable, durability is a high priority for the YBS-52, and incidental contact won’t knock anything out of alignment on it. If it takes a more substantial contact, the YBS-52 is so familiar to school systems and to woodwind technicians that parts are never difficult to obtain. Even baritone specialists who move on to the YBS-62 often keep their YBS-52 because they are such a great back-up horn and because they are so comfortable to play. Their user-friendly keywork is legendary.
One consistent compliment the YBS-52 receives is its ease of play. You’d think on a baritone, you’d have to have a naturally long reach, but with the YBS-52, it simply isn’t true. The finger spread is really comfortable. Many experienced saxophonists even report a more comfortable hole placement than they experience with their tenors and altos.
The octave mechanism’s three-key venting design slots the high octave on the G, G# and A with dead-on intonation. The low A mechanism closes with absolute authority and really helps the 52 supply that big, round low end. Great sound and playability are the hallmarks of the YBS-52.
