Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low EbThe Yamaha YCL-221 Low Eb Bass Clarinet has many of the same features as professional models, but the ABS brushed resin body keeps this horn very affordable. Proven quality and durability keeps Yamaha bass clarinets a top choice among band directors. The matte finish gives the clarinet a handsome appearance, while the ABS resin body makes the clarinet lightweight and durable. At the same time, it resonates nicely and gives it a rich, warm sound and an excellent response. Its neck angle is now the same as the professional models, resulting in a much more comfortable and natural playing position. The leather pads (also used on its saxophones) are long lasting and provide a better feel than standard clarinet pads. The YCL-221's tone holes were scientifically designed and placed for extremely accurate intonation. The rounded key prevents key damage and eliminates the need to hold the keys when putting the instrument together. Finally, a new joint system features rubber rings surrounding the cork that help prevent air leaks, ease assembly and prevent keys from binding.

Choose from the folowing Yamaha Warranties:
I use this model of bass clarinet in my advanced band at my middle school. I don't actually own this instrument, but I use the schools. It gets and excellent sound in the lower octaves. The rubber rings are great for assembly. The way that the bass clarinet (at least mine does, it might be a different model) splits in half, reducing the size of the case by almost half. The lower notes really vibrate! Nice sound in the altissimo register. Overall, great horn.
The instrument is well made and, for the most part, plays in tune with itself. However, after about 10 minutes of playing the instrument plays much too sharp and is difficult to play with an orchestra. The 2nd chair bass clarinetist that I play with also has the YCL 221 and she has the same problem.
For a student instrument, it has gotten me quite far. The whole instrument is sharp and you have to pull the neckpiece out quite far, but it's not a problem. You get used to it. I can play easily in the really high registers easily, even tongue into the notes (if i have a good reed) I use a Clark Fobes mouthpiece and it sounds wonderful. It's obviously no buffet low C, but this is 1/9 of the price.
I?m so glad I bought this clarinet! It has really good tone and at a good price. I recommend this bass clarinet!!
I play with a local community concert band, and although I'm not a "professional" musician, I've got a great deal of experience on soprano clarinet, alto & tenor sax, and the bass clarinet. I decided to switch from soprano to bass clarinet to meet the band's needs, and needed to find a new bass clarinet. I tried a selmer, buffet, and this Yamaha. It was the best! Warm, rich tone, great key action, feels and fits great playing it. I'm the envy of the two other bass clarinet players, and one of our tenor sax players has been eyeing it. You won't go wrong in buying this instrument - especially at this price!
