Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low EbThe Yamaha YCL-221 Low Eb Bass Clarinet has many of the same features as professional models, but the ABS brushed resin body keeps this horn very affordable. Proven quality and durability keeps Yamaha bass clarinets a top choice among band directors. The matte finish gives the clarinet a handsome appearance, while the ABS resin body makes the clarinet lightweight and durable. At the same time, it resonates nicely and gives it a rich, warm sound and an excellent response. Its neck angle is now the same as the professional models, resulting in a much more comfortable and natural playing position. The leather pads (also used on its saxophones) are long lasting and provide a better feel than standard clarinet pads. The YCL-221's tone holes were scientifically designed and placed for extremely accurate intonation. The rounded key prevents key damage and eliminates the need to hold the keys when putting the instrument together. Finally, a new joint system features rubber rings surrounding the cork that help prevent air leaks, ease assembly and prevent keys from binding.

Great tone from a student model. Great intonation and feel.
Unlike the 221, the 221II is tunned to A442 (most American ensembles tune to A440). On average it plays between 15 and 25 cents sharp. This instrument is fine for young players and middle school bands, but if you don't naturally play extremely flat, it is almost impossible to play in tune. It's unfortunate that this information is not included in the product description. I wouldn't have purchased this instrument had I known this beforehand.
I've been playing clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor sax for eight years now with a school concert band (all ranges of music, from sports to classical). I began with a Yamaha student clarinet. It was a wonderful instrument, which I still use happily. Renting from the school, I was paired with first a brand new Vito, and then a moderately used Selmer. I've used the Selmer as a bench mark. It has a good sound quality and is perfect for a student. Being a senior, I got the Yamaha. It?s a beautiful instrument, and it sounds wonderful. The breakdown of the main body is also a plus, as the case is half the length and makes the instrument much more manageable. Also for sports band (standing in stand, playing faster music that?s usually higher in the range) it performs wonderfully. It seems strange too, but the placement of the neck strap eye is a definite plus for marching and standing.
Yamaha is usually great right out of the box and this bass clarinet is certainly up to that standard. I bought the instrument for my school and it sounds tremendous in the ensembles. The "rubber ball" stand is very secure and the case is nice and small so that it travels well (worked as a carry-on on our recent tour to Hong Kong). The instrument is solid and the price is right - get this horn!
This instrument truly is the best bass clarinet model one can buy at this price. Unlike many other student models (all of the ones I've played), this one does not need to have the neck pushed down all the way in order to be in tune, allowing musicians who use any kind of embouchure to still play in tune by adjusting the neck either way. The full range of the instrument is great, with the low end resonating beautifully and the high end playing consistently with a full tone, with good intonation ranging over three octaves. The instrument I have used had some issues with a faulty register system, as well as a somewhat sharp low Eb. Both of those issues are likely to not represent the model as a whole, however. Overall, I consider it a great choice for anyone not willing to buy a professional grade instrument, and especially for school use.
I have been playing bass clarinet for 3 years now and this model is my absolute FAVORITE!!! The tone is crisp and clean and BEAUTIFUL!!! I haven?t bought it myself but I use the one that my school provides me and I would recommend it to anyone!!!
I play with a local community concert band, and although I'm not a "professional" musician, I've got a great deal of experience on soprano clarinet, alto & tenor sax, and the bass clarinet. I decided to switch from soprano to bass clarinet to meet the band's needs, and needed to find a new bass clarinet. I tried a selmer, buffet, and this Yamaha. It was the best! Warm, rich tone, great key action, feels and fits great playing it. I'm the envy of the two other bass clarinet players, and one of our tenor sax players has been eyeing it. You won't go wrong in buying this instrument - especially at this price!
I picked up this instrument for jazz playing. It's perfect for my needs. I don't mind the 442 tuning, since [a] some orchestras play high (yeah, they tune to 440, but don't stay there) and [b] playing louder for jazz means "blowing flat" to some degree. I am very happy with it.
This bass clarinet is well-made. I was able to play it right out of the box with no key fiddling or bending. It has a very nice warm sound. The professional features of this instrument with its low price make it a great buy for any enthusiast. I was impressed with the look and feel of the instrument as well. It fits together very tightly (requiring liberal use of cork grease!) and its multi-joint system makes it more portable. The only thing it lacks is a low-C range.
I use this model of bass clarinet in my advanced band at my middle school. I don't actually own this instrument, but I use the schools. It gets and excellent sound in the lower octaves. The rubber rings are great for assembly. The way that the bass clarinet (at least mine does, it might be a different model) splits in half, reducing the size of the case by almost half. The lower notes really vibrate! Nice sound in the altissimo register. Overall, great horn.
