Yamaha YCL-650 Professional Bb ClarinetThe Yamaha YCL-650 is an excellent choice for those who are serious about their clarinet performance but need to watch their budget. The specifications of its bell, barrel, toneholes and other features are very close to those of the Custom SEV model, so its sound is warm, round, and deeply resonant.Made of carefully select and seasoned grenadilla wood and boasting an pronounced handcrafting and hand finishing, the YCL-650 features tapered toneholes which are undercut by hand for precise intonation and superior tonal balance. It also features beautifully sculpted keys whose touch has been regulated by master artisans for perfect balance.Serious clarinetists will find inspiration in the tone and responsiveness of the YCL-650 Bb clarinets. Featuring newly designed 65mm barrels-similar to Yamaha's acclaimed V Series-and durable blue steel spring material, the clarinets offer a beautiful natural finish on grenadilla bodies. The combination of aesthetic beauty and quick action promises an outstanding playing experience, as does the resonance chamber in the bell, which gives the instrument wonderful projection.

The Yamaha YCL-650 is a beautiful clarinet for those who want to teach music. Its sound is rich in tone and color and the response is just great. Combined with a Vandoren mouthpiece it's a great clarinet for people who want to teach privet lessons.
I love the natural finish. Looks black from a distance but up close you can see the brown grain in the wood. Great response. Very clear throat A. Low E and F do not seem to resonate as well as the YCL-450 we own. I believe this is due to the resonance chamber in the bell. I play w/ a big sound so the resonance chamber will minimize booming on low E and F.
I bought this clarinet a year ago to start playing again after 20 years. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but wanted a good instrument. It is a beautiful looking clarinet, but it has some intonation problems. The clarion register plays sharp and it is almost impossible to get the high C in tune. I tried an R13 with the same mouthpiece and reed and it played perfectly in-tune. Poor intonation is the most disappointing aspect of this clarinet.
I recently purchased this clarinet as a step up from my $300 used plastic horn. We stopped at the music store and tried clarinets for 3 hours. Although the Buffet R13 had a nicer tone (especially on the lower notes) I noticed that the 650 was really flexible. It could churn out classical, jazz, klezmer, latin etc. quite well and evenly. I would recommend this to any student in a school band because it can accommodate almost any type of music. And of course, the wood is wonderful, being unstained. However, recently it?s been darkening from exposure to sunlight and its looks a bit worse every day. The tone is warm on the lower notes, and sweet on the higher notes. The throat tones are pretty breathy though (at least on mine). I'd say this clarinet would best suit: High-schoolers, private teachers, or klezmer enthusiasts (the upper registers have that beautiful "controlled screeching" quality if you're doing it right. I wouldn't know). 41/2 stars, actually.
I love my Yahama 650. It has a great sound. I like that with the proper ligature, and with my Combs mouthpiece, I can get a darker sound too. Some say the case is too small but I like that because I have a music bag that carries all my accessories and clarinet too.
