I played a myriad of trumpets and cornets at the recent NKU Trumpet Day. I loved the 8310Z, however, nothing prepared me for my first Eb experience. I've not been at this very long and was a bit intimidated. That all went away with my first tune. I found this soprano cornet easier to play than any Bb instrument. I realize that this goes against conventional wisdom, but that is my experience. The notes flowed like liquid gold. This is a fabulous instrument worth every cent!
I shopped around for about a year before buying my Xeno Eb. During that time I had the opportunity to try Kanstul, Getzen, Schilke, & Blackburn. I chose the Xeno based on some e-mails with designer Professor David King, YBS and also trial playing at ITG conferences. The tone is creamy sweet and I don't lip notes for intonation adjustments. I played Philip Sparke's "Flowerdale" Eb solo this past season and the horn was both pure and crystal clear as needed. I added a Ted Sparx cornet mouthpiece to my set-up to make for an unbeatable combination. I can't recommend this instrument enough. BTW, Peter Roberts happily played the prototype as it was being designed.
I've been playing soprano in a brass band for a little over a year. I started on the band's Schilke, which sounded great but had a lot of intonation quirks - required a lot of alternate fingerings and/or lipping in the mid range. When I decided to stay on Soprano permanently, I bought the Xeno based solely on the review on 4barsrest. They were dead on with their assessment - the intonation on this horn is dead on - no more fretting about being out of tune. The upper range on this horn seems a bit easier as well. Like one of the other reviewers, I also use a Sparx 4E, which did nothing for me on the Schilke, but seems much better matched the the Xeno. LOVE it.
