I currently own a Yamaha student flute, and a Yamaha YFL-361H, and a Yamaha YPC-32 piccolo, and I have NEVER had a disappointment with these instruments. I recommend Yamaha and ONLY Yamaha. Gemeinhardt is still a great brand, but the tone of the Yamaha YFL-361H isn't airy like the Gemeinhardt's. My open hole flute is very comfortable to hold and the fingerings are easier than most flutes, and it's overall performance is amazing.

I purchased this flute for my daughter when she was in 5th grade to replace a student model Gemeinhardt that we had. She immediately improved in her playing-the solid silver headjoint is more responsive for the lower register, and the upper register is smoother. I've played flutes ranging from $75 to $11,000. I use this flute as a back-up when mine (which cost thousands more) is having adjustments. Because the body is silver-plated, it has the warm sound of a silver flute, without the extra weight. I have small hands, and the off-set G and light weight make it more comfortable for me to practice. It's also ideal for young students, but it can certainly take a serious flutist up to the college level, as it has the features of professional level flute. Most flutists will eventually want or need a solid silver flute if they decide to major in music at the college level.
