Yamaha YOB-241 Series Student OboeAn economic ABS resin-body oboe that features a modified conservatoiry system, making it easier for beginners to play. The surprisingly precise intonation permits students to concentrate more on developing their own musical nuances. But there is nothing "student-like" about the rich and colorful sound. The 241 has a characteristically warm oboe tone, with a sound very close to that of a professional instrument, so even a complete beginner can quickly develop a beautiful tone. All Yamaha wind instruments come with a limited 5-year warranty.

Choose from the folowing Yamaha Warranties:
I've been teaching oboe for over 15 years, and I have played on a LOT of beginning-level oboes over the years. In my opinion, the Yamaha student-line oboes are the best of the beginner instruments. They lack several keys, but if you absolutely can't afford a full conservatory instrument (one that has all the keys), this is the way to go. They seem to stay in adjustment better than other brands, and all the Yamaha oboes - beginning through professional - are pretty free-blowing and easy to get a big sound on.
That said, PLEASE consider getting a higher level oboe! (In Yamahas, the higher the number, the better the instrument. YOB-841 is the best.) If you/your child continues playing, you WILL eventually have to upgrade from the 241. The more advanced a student gets, the more vital those missing keys will become, and a better instrument makes a huge difference in tone quality as well.
(I still recommend Yamaha for the higher-level instruments. Several of my students have purchased 841s. Yamaha has a MUCH better warranty than Loree, and Lorees have much more resistance. I've found that my high school students frequently just don't have the strength yet to get a good tone and intonation on a Loree. They get better tone and pitch immediately on the Yamaha, whereas it might take several years to develop that on a Loree. Plus the Yamahas are significantly less expensive.)
This is a quality instrument, but it is missing three things that are absolutely important to have on an oboe.
1. There is no left F natural key, which is probably the most important key on an oboe.
2. There is no forked F resonance key, meaning that to play forked F one has to play it with the Eb key down. Very important.
3. There is no low Bb key or low Bb resonance hole. Also important.
If you're stretched for money, then get it. However, having seen students start on these and move up to instruments with all of the keywork, there are habits which are difficult to unlearn. It's much better to spend some extra money on an oboe with all of the necessary keywork.
This is a very good oboe. I have had it for 2 1/2 years. The only thing is it doesn't have a low b flat key. You have to use your knees to play it. Other than that, it's perfect!
Although I've been a musician for many years, I've just started the Oboe and this Yamaha is my second instrument. I really love it for these reasons: It's light, easy to play, sounds great, and travels well. My instrument benefited from a little bit of adjustment from a skilled player and I've been playing it every day for over a month. I highly recommend the 241!
