This is a magical, amazing instrument. It is always in tune. I'm an amateur, but I can make it sound like a flute, clarinet or trumpet. It can sound like Kenny G one minute and raw the next. Playing this can be a spiritual experience. I tried out this horn with a Yanigasawa custom model. The Yani was easier to play and had a nicer case and was cheaper, but this had (and still does) the wonderful tone. I usually play it with a metal Otto Link 6 and the lig that came with that mouthpiece, but my Jodyjazz rubber 6 is also great with it.
I just started playing the Soprano Saxophone in July 2007 and started with a beginner brand. Finding that I was in love with the sound of the Soprano Saxophone, I upgraded to the Custom 875EX Yamaha in October 2007 and even my teacher, who is a real professional, is astounded at the sound of this horn. It is easy to play and has a wonderful appearance, in addition to the super quality construction. It ships in a leather case that is equally as nice and easy to handle as the instrument. The Yamaha Custom 875EX is the finest quality instrument I have ever purchased. I am now playing Kenny G numbers on it and getting that same fabulous sound. I recently compared it to a Selmer Series III and it sounds much better than that horn. With its own mouthpiece and a Vandoren Optimum Ligature and Rico Hemke reeds, this horn is warm, controllable, and everything a saxophone should sound like.
This soprano is AMAZING. This is my first soprano, and the moment I played it, out of the box, it was beautiful!!! It came with a reed and everything. Surprisingly, the finger layout, as well as the feel of the horn is strangely like my Yamaha tenor; YTS-52. The intonation is way beyond anything I?ve ever heard before. It?s sweet, yet somewhat focused (with the original mouthpiece; I use a Rousseau 4R for classical, and it sounds a lot different). The only thing that I've noticed is that the tuning on mid and high C# is flat, but I?m pretty sure it?s me. Also, all notes (including high D, D#, E, E#, F, F#) are extremely flawless. F# can be a bit troublesome at times, but it?s right on most of the time. I'm not sure what it is, but there is something about a Yamaha that separates it from the other brands. If you?re in need of a great, yet inexpensive horn, then go for Yamaha. I would say that they are freakishly consistent horns (from a YTS-52 [475] to a YSS-875). If you have any questions, email, would be best.
This sax is amazing. I want to advise...if you're thinking about saving bucks and getting the YSS-675, think again! I tried both horns and unlike the other reviewer, found a huge difference in response and tone. This horn combines effortless response with a stunning tone. Also, don't base your judgment on the mouthpiece it comes with. You need to put a pro mouthpiece on it to really see what it is capable of. I found the bundled mouthpiece makes it sound winy. Build quality is good. A perfect soprano sax.
This horn is LIGHTS OUT! It has such a great, dynamic, multipurpose sound that you can use it in everything from classical ballads all the way to the most rippin? run you've ever played in a HOT Latin piece. It dares you to even try to play out of tune. The clear lacquer has such a warm, rich sound however it can play bright when you need it to. The keys are perfectly situated for easy runs and they are light as feathers. I tried out 6 different sops before I bought this one, i.e. Selmer S80, Yanagisawa S990, Yanagisawa S991, Yamaha YSS-475, Yamaha YSS-675, and Yamaha YSS-82Z. The Yamaha YSS-875EX played the best........right out of the box. One conflict I ran into when buying was that the Yamaha YSS-675 played extremely similar....HOWEVER with the YSS-675 being a mere 300 dollars less, it just made sense to go with the YSS-875EX to get the newest innovation of Yamaha. Innovation of the Custom series meets (the) hands of innovative musicians.
