Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb TrumpetThe Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom is a result of Yamaha' s partnership with the great trumpeter Bobby Shew. Bobby is a versatile player, equally at home in a lead role in a big band or in a largely soloing context in a quintet setting. Shew had a vision of creating one single efficient instrument that could screech a lead line, or blow sweet, mellow ballades. He finally found that instrument in the Z.When Yamaha decided to try to improve the Z, trumpet designer Shunichi Niwata and R&D specialist Bob Malone worked together with Bobby, making sure it had what Bobby needed in order to handle all of these various applications. The result was the Z as it is today. Key of Bb. Lightweight; .445" bore; one-piece, 5", yellow brass bell; one piece, drawn, gold brass mouthpipe; Monel pistons; hand-lapped pistons and slides; laser-fused pluzuma welded bell; unbraced inner outer tuning slide; large bell flare; large bore tuning slide; and special bead and bell taper.

I have a '47 Chicago Benge and a '47 Martin Committee and the new ShewHorn has the smoothest jazz tone that is contemporary and drips with warm overtones. The slotting on this horn is dead on..I don't even need to correct the D and F drastically to stay in tune. This horn is one flexible bugle. You can go from low F# to G above the staff like the notes were next to one another. It only took 2 hours to completely feel at home on the Shew. The valves are very fast without feeling like your fighting the mechanism. The looks are killer. What's not to like with this baby. I went from a large bore Martin to this horn and I can last way longer on this horn. Still hitting the strato notes late in the night. Great tone really smooth..no harsh or brash tone at all. and if you have the lungs it will scream without breaking up....
I have owned many horns, a Schilke X-3 which I loved, a Calicchio, a Monette, a couple of Bach?s, other Yamahas. This horn beats them all. This horn has an even response top to bottom. It not only sounds great playing ear-ripping lead, it has a great "bounce" to it as a jazz horn. It also blends well in concert band and brass quintet. It slots well to a double c and above, including the notorious high a. I recently had the opportunity to play a Broadway type of revue show that I had played two years earlier on another horn, the above mentioned Calicchio, which is a really good horn. There was a nasty line that was in unison with a singer that needed restraint and control that went up to an e above high c and back down into the middle register. This line gave me problems on some of the performances two years ago. This time around I nailed it every time, in tune, without a scratch for all 12 performances on the 8310z. This is a horn I ordered without play testing. I have never looked back.
I'm a sophomore in my high school band. We are playing a song for our marching band with several high G's above high C. I was able to hit them before I bought this trumpet, but on very rare occasion, now I can nail a G and do it consecutive times throughout the song. I've also been able to pull out an A. This trumpet projects its sound far better than other trumpets, yet it can play mellow and soft when needed. This trumpet has the quality of a Schilke but costs several hundred less.
Absolutely love it! I was at grade 7 and really needed something better than the nice but limited flugel and very basic cornet I already had, tried loads of pro standard horns and this was by far the best. Hugely volatile and responsive, you can really get feeling into the music, without busting a gut. Brilliant tone throughout the register, a great buy. I managed to get it a very good condition second hand.
The Yamaha 8310Z is a great playing trumpet. It's also very easy to play. it's very lightweight. If you're used to a Bach Strad; this horn will feel very different. It gives you more for your money. This horn is very versatile as well. It can be used in both symphonic and jazz settings. Excellent
