OVERVIEW

It's a screamer and a ballad horn all at once.

The Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom is a result of Yamaha' s partnership with the great trumpeter Bobby Shew. Bobby is a versatile player, equally at home in a lead role in a big band or in a largely soloing context in a quintet setting. Shew had a vision of creating one single efficient instrument that could screech a lead line, or blow sweet, mellow ballades. He finally found that instrument in the Z.

When Yamaha decided to try to improve the Z, trumpet designer Shunichi Niwata and R&D specialist Bob Malone worked together with Bobby, making sure it had what Bobby needed in order to handle all of these various applications.

The result was the Z as it is today. Key of Bb. Lightweight; .445" bore; one-piece, 5", yellow brass bell; one piece, drawn, gold brass mouthpipe; Monel pistons; hand-lapped pistons and slides; laser-fused pluzuma welded bell; unbraced inner outer tuning slide; large bell flare; large bore tuning slide; and special bead and bell taper.

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

Like many professional musicians, I've attended NAMM shows over the years and attempt to play everything out there. For many years, I've owned a beautiful Bach Stradivarius and have been very happy with this fine horn... until I played the Yamaha Bobby Shew trumpet. Wow, the Z-horn has an amazingly rich sound with dead-on intonation and it is exceptionally comfortable to play.

For weeks, I played this horn side-by-side with my Bach trumpet. As a straight-ahead jazz musician, I definitely prefer the Yamaha's sonic accuracy and versatility, as well as the superior mechanical precision of the Shew horn. Making music on this superb instrument is next to effortless. I'm so impressed with the Yamaha product that I recently sold both my Bach horns and then purchased a Yamaha YFH-8310Z flugelhorn as well.

The remarkable ease of playing these Yamaha brass instruments allows me to focus on the music rather than on the effort of playing the notes. These are elegant horns that are truly a joy to play.

Unbelievable sound and versatility for the price

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

Wanted a horn that could handle the high register interval slotting needed for classical arpeggios etc. but still had a nice full sound in the mid range. This horn did it all. I found the Bachs (180s37 and 43) were great for the high register accuracy but were lacking in projection and fullness in the mid range. If I played orchestra or wind ensemble only, I think I would probably go Bach but I was sold on the versatility of this horn. Not to mention the price. BTW the mouthpiece that comes with this horn should not be overlooked. If you're out trying horns, do not make a decision without trying 8310Z.

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I have played many trumpets, including my LT180S37 Bach Stradivarius, and this is by far one of the best trumpets I have ever played. I perform in two local big bands (in one I play lead trumpet), in our local park band, and a few other various groups. Let me start by saying this trumpet screams in the high range. It opens up very easily and the intonation is great above the C above the staff. It also has wonderful projection. The director of our big band joked to the audience recently that our trumpet section is now accepting work peeling paint off the sides of buildings (Two of us use the 8310Z). I have also found that this trumpet is great for outdoors work. When playing with the local park band I don't get overly tired and it projects very well. This is important when playing in the summer heat. One of my primary concerns about the 8310Z was if it had the ability to sound great at low volumes. I was happy to find that the trumpet plays just as wonderfully when playing softly and sweetly as it does when playing high energy, loud music. I couldn't be happier with the results I am getting from the 8310Z. All in all I have found that this trumpet is great for any kind of performance I throw at it. I would not have expected so much out of such a reasonably priced trumpet. Just as a side note the case it comes with is fantastic. It fits my 8310Z, my Bach, and my two Warburton mouthpieces perfectly. I also enjoy that I am able to lock them up in the case when I am not using them.

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I used to play on Bach strad light-weight with a 72 bell for a bigger sound. It was great. But found myself working harder than I needed at the end of a long night. With the 8310Z. Since day one. I noticed didn't have to use a large airstream. With less effort achieved same results. I have an increased response throughout the entire range on the horn. From my lowest note. To my highest. Makes a GREAT, AWESOME, LEAD trumpet. Everyone who's tried my horn notices it to. Guess they know my secret now. :-) Special Thanx to WW&BW for the great deal on a beautiful gem like this.

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I will keep this short and sweet. I lead a big band and specialize in dance music and the music of Maynard Ferguson. Originally, I played a Holton MF Horn, but wanted a smaller, lighter horn to make my work easier. I purchased the Yamaha 6310Z and never looked back! I was able to blend with the ensemble without killing the poor saxophones, AND step up front for a Maynard chart without a microphone. Since many of our venues are smaller, this was important. When I tried the 8310Z, I was stunned. It had somehow surpassed its predecessor! It's by far the most versitile horn on the market. How often can you use the same horn for Chet Baker AND Maynard Ferguson? However, I did not purchase the 8310Z because it once again allowed me to easily overpower the big band. I love my 6310Z and play it religiously. But I think the 8310Z is more dynamic and responsive.

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I'm a highschool student and I figured it was time to up grade to a pro trumpet. After trying out lots of trumpets this one stood out. It has a great tone, it extended my range, and it's note slotting is right on. The only trumpet to compare this one to is the Yamaha New York Artist trumpet, but for the price this one is a much better deal. Also, the Bobby Shew mouthpiece it comes with is a great all-around mouthpiece.

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I have played Bach products for 35 years, so I was looking for another horn, finally. I play tested for several hours over 3 sessions at WWBW and narrrowed my choices down to the Shew and the Bergeron yamaha's. Both these horns out performed the Getzen's I tried, which surprised me. The Shew could peel paint, as they say nowadays and the Bergeron could do it also but in a nicer way. In the end, I felt more comfortable with the Shew in my hands and my interval work was more spot on. Both horns slot well with the Bergeron being a little darker in tone. The only con I have with the Shew is the case...very small and really quite worthless. I kept my old refurbished Bach case. No more Bach's, this horn really improves your play and sound. Very good craftsmanship and I can't wait to play it live...

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I couldn't have asked for a better lead horn! I use the 8310Z as my primary lead horn in a Big Band, with my churches Praise Band and as a soloist. This is one of the easiest horns i've ever played. Three and four octaves come with ease as does perfect intonation throughout. I recommend this horn to anyone. Be careful though, if you over play it, she'll bite back!

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I purchased this horn after playing on another lightweight horn, a Strad Model 43, for many years, and I could immediately tell that I was going to buy it. It is extremely easy to play, even from the start, and it slots perfectly, though you can still throw it around when you want to. The sound, depending on the way you use your air, is very full, with a great even quality to it. The c-trumpet derived 5" bell offers great projection, and creates a big sound, which sounds excellent in classical and jazz. For lead work, this is your home. First of all the sound is big, so you can fill any room regardless of size, and the upper register is very clean (oh, and by the way, this trumpet can scream). So feel free to wale and leave smoke. It is also quite easy to play up there, but in some instances (it may be a mouthpiece issue), the horn is limited to a high F/G, but that is what Yamahas' are great for: Also, the horn is said to have a medium/large bore, but be prepared for something closer to a large bore, because it is very free-blowing. Although, with this horn, it is very possible that you will find you like the free-blowiness! Overall, great for classical, great for jazz (bigband, small group, and Maynard kind of stuff), and I am sure it would be great for lower orchestral parts as well. This is a great main horn!!!!

    Great Horn!!!

Comments about Yamaha YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew Custom Series Bb Trumpet:

I have owned many horns, a Schilke X-3 which I loved, a Calicchio, a Monette, a couple of BachÆs, other Yamahas. This horn beats them all. This horn has an even response top to bottom. It not only sounds great playing ear-ripping lead, it has a great "bounce" to it as a jazz horn. It also blends well in concert band and brass quintet. It slots well to a double c and above, including the notorious high a. I recently had the opportunity to play a Broadway type of revue show that I had played two years earlier on another horn, the above mentioned Calicchio, which is a really good horn. There was a nasty line that was in unison with a singer that needed restraint and control that went up to an e above high c and back down into the middle register. This line gave me problems on some of the performances two years ago. This time around I nailed it every time, in tune, without a scratch for all 12 performances on the 8310z. This is a horn I ordered without play testing. I have never looked back.
