This saxophone is a great sax for beginners. I got mine 4 years ago, and even after high school marching band, and jazz band, it is playing great. It really holds up well. It also is very comfortable to play, and the key layout feels natural. The sound from this horn is also great. It's rich, and balanced. This isn?t the best choice if you are going for a really specific sound, but for someone who wants to pick up a tenor to learn, or for a gift for a student, this is perfect.
Ive had this sax for over 5 years. It has been marched with for four years straight living in oregon it has gotten wet alot. The original pads seem to be fine even with all its abuse. This is the most comfortable sax ever, everything is in the right place and is super light, my only con is there is no F# key. this is okay because it isn't meant to last as long as ive been playing it. especially for the tenor player a highschooler doesnt need an F# key.
I've had this sax since 1987,played throughout Jr.high,High School(concert, jazz & 1yr marching band) & still play to this day in a town community concert & Jazz band.Once it's warmed up, the sound just keeps getting better. Played with a E. Rousseau hard rubber mouthpiece & vandoren #3ZZ reeds gives it a nice warm jazz sound. My one & only sax, till I break the bank & get the Selmer Mark VI. Wish it had the high F#.
Yes, there are other student models that are cheaper, but the YTS-23 is worth the money. The overall build quality is good enough so people learning the saxophone don't have to worry about it easily breaking on them. The key action, while obviously not as smooth as higher end tenors, doesn't feel clunky.
My YTS-23 was made in 1993. After all that time, the lacquer is worn but not too badly, the pads are still in good shape, and it plays in tune without much work. Not much more I can ask for in a backup tenor (My primary instrument is a Selmer Mark VI). It only really gives up to the Selmer in terms of keywork smoothness and it's a touch less flexible in terms of tone. Considering that it really does come close to a good VI, that makes the 23 very worth it at almost any price, although they do depreciate a lot in value from new to used.
