I am a professional saxophonist and I was playing on a Selmer Mark IV while in college. While my horn was in the shop, I borrowed a friend's YTS-875EX and fell in love with it. I immediately sold my Selmer and bought a Yamaha. Now all 3 of my saxophones, sop/alto/tenor, are the custom series now. You will NOT be disappointed!
I LOVE THIS INSTRUMENT! I've only played it once, but boy did I love the way it responded, with endless clarity and tone quality, at every volume level! I have also used a friend's Yamaha Custom 82Z before, and i really liked it, but at least for me, this one is king! if i were to tell someone what to get, I would tell them Try both the 82Z and the 875EX, because what works best for me might not work the same way for another player.
This sax plays like a dream. Its response is magnificent and the key work is marvelous. Its tone is phat and can cut through any ensemble for a fantastic solo or blend with the rest of the section. Also, the looks of the sax are great! Compared to other saxes, even other Yamahas, it has this great golden color that just can't be ignored. In addition, it's lightweight and the keys seem to move like hot knife through butter. This instrument plays by itself! Well worth the money!
I recently purchased a Black lacquer version of the Yamaha YTS-875EX Tenor Sax and I can't put it down! The G3 neck, the black lacquer finish, and the French Brass construction produces the richest tones I have heard in all my years of playing! The tone of the sax can easily be made bright with just a little push in air velocity. I played a Tenor Selmer Mark VI for about 10 years but in my opinion the Yamaha Custom out performs it......it sings! I recommend going with the black lacquer version if you want a little darker tone. Believe you me, this is undoubtedly the best buy and the best sounding tenor sax in the market today!!
The YTS-875EX is the finest concert saxophone available to date. The newly designed neck, the resizing of tone holes, the realignment of tone holes, and redesign of keys, make this instrument play better in tune than other brands. It has a full warm tone even greater than my old Selmer Mark VI. This instrument is a joy to play and very reasonably priced for the quality provided. I recommend a Caravan mouthpiece to compliment the warmth of the instrument's tone.
I don't care what music you play, and I don't care whose marketing or endorsements you've read. If you are looking for a new tenor, you would be a fool not to try this horn.
I was looking for a top-of-the-line tenor myself, and I tried everything I could get my hands on. Being a rock and blues player I wasn't expecting much from this sax, but the day I played one it blew away nearly every other horn in the store inside five minutes apiece. Selmers (including a pair of Mark VI's), Yanis, Keilwerths, Cannonballs, even other Yamahas, over 30 professional-grade horns across 15 models got sent back to their cases while an EX went to my stand again and again. Two years later I have tried quite a few more saxes both new and old and still nothing can beat an EX for me.
Do yourself a favor and give this horn a shot.
On a side note, Yamaha's consistency is entirely unmatched, so if you try one and like it, you'll like any other decently-set-up horn of the same model. I was at a showcase and I got to try two other EX's against mine while blindfolded, and I could not tell the difference between the three. I'm glad I knew the serial number on mine.
The Best horn! It's very reactive and smooth. It also looks amazing! I have been playing the sax for 30 year this is the best by far. I've played Selmer Paris 64 Series III and this is much better that it. It has a beautiful tone from the low register to the high register.
