Product Description
Yanagisawa
The only real choice for the player who prefers a curved soprano, Yanagisawa has improved the wildly popular 901 with the 991. You'll love the immediate response and wonderful tone colors.
Product Overview and Specifications
The Yanagisawa SC-991 curved soprano is a beautifully designed and finely crafted saxophone. Its increased neck angle gives it richer tone and makes it more capable of aggressive playing, while many little refinements combine to make it especially fast, smooth, and articulate. Key of Bb. Range from low Bb to high F#, all brass construction with lacquer finish and hand engraving, white shell lined indented pearl buttons, adjustable thumb rest mounted with only four small contact points to minimize effect on the resonance, pointed pivot screws, waterproof leather pads with metal resonators, tapered steel needle springs, and tri-point balanced body-bell brace.

I'd say this is the best buy you could do with sop sax.

Last Feb., I drove all the way to south bend Indiana, to try out Yanagisawa sc 991 and few other models (Yanagisawa sc 992, Yamaha custom, Selmer la Voix curved). Among all, sc 991 blew easiest. The sound was even and equal throughout the scale and the tones were very stable. Comparing other models, the Yanagisawa sc 991 quality was second to none and for money saving value ($1000 or less comparing to other respectable Saxes), the choice was very obvious to me. Obviously, I prefer the curved than the straights so my review could be a bit biased. As far as comparison between sc 992 and sc 991 go, I honestly couldn’t see too much difference. I could see why some say sc 992 has richer and darker sound but for a hobbyist it didn’t make too much difference. One suggestion I would make anyone who considers buying this horn is to use a rubber mp. I used Beechler Bellite 6 prior to using this horn but now I use Runyon 8 rubber mp. This horn doesn’t seem to be too compatible with metal mps.

Prior to purchasing this horn, I was playing a friends 901 model Yani soprano. After purchasing this horn, I felt that the intonation was even better. The tone was rich like the 901 and the newer keywork make it a good acquisition for me.
