My previous tenor was a Mark VI. I bought the Yani T-992 in the spring of 1999. Yanagisawa quality control produces very consistent quality. No horn has a better action. I find the 991 (brass horn) as good as any. However, the 992 produces a tone with lots of stuff going on that makes the sound very interesting. Listen to a long tone on this horn and you can hear more frequencies. The ring like bells! Play reflecting off different surfaces and in different rooms and there is just more going on in every note. Increase the dynamic and the sound takes off! Back off to a whisper and the "small voice" can pierce you to the center of your being. The larger the room the more you hear. Outside it has the best projection. Overall the sound is full and dark. I am an intermediate player and now receive many compliments from pros about my "sound". It is more interesting than with the Selmer. The horn has been very reliable even with airline travel.
I'd had my eye on this saxophone for years and finally buckled and bought it six months ago. My primary instrument had been a Yanagisawa B901 (their middle-line baritone model), and I had been very happy with that. This tenor confirmed that Yanagisawa has nailed the ergonomics of saxophone design---the grip on both my baritone and tenor feel the most natural of any saxophone I've played. Before purchasing this sax, I play-tested a couple other saxes including the Selmer Paris Reference 54, and was surprised that the lower register popped out a little more easily on the Yanagisawa. Friends who play 54's have told me that usually their saxes gurgled in the lower register until they took them to the shop, but this tenor was good to go out of the box. One quirk is that the G# pinky table only has one roller between the B and C# keys, so the action is slightly more stifled than on some other Saxes I've played, but I've gotten used to it. For mouthpieces, I have found the Peter Ponzol M2 Plus and Yanagisawa metal to be very compatible. The Ponzol's baffle nicely complements the dark tone the sax's bronze body comes with while the Yanagisawa gives a crisper and brighter tone in case you need to move in the other direction. (If you need to move further than that, you're probably better off buying a sax with a more conventional brass or silver body.) If you want to use an Otto Link, you may need to re-cork the neck more thickly to get it to fit.
Wow. Where to start? Versatility: I've played this sucker in everything from pep band to marching band to Jazz Band to Concert Bands to solo performances to anything you can thing of and it does it all, doesn't even matter. The intonation is pretty much spot on... everywhere. I think I'm in love. It can be smooth, it can wail, it can be whatever you want it to be without little effort on your part. 100% Classy Horn.
The Yanagisawa T992 Professional Bronze Tenor Saxophone is a great horn for a great price! You simply cannot match the quality of this horn. This horn has surperior construction down to the smallest details. The intonation is absolutely even throughout the entire range of the horn. The tone is dark and warm. If you blow properly you really feel this horn resonate. The Yani T992 is such a pleasure to play. I play it so much my girlfriend hates that I got it. I have a new confidence at gigs because I know this horn will go wherever I take it-easily. I compared this horn against many including the top pro/custom Yamahas, Selmers, Cannonballs, and every vintage horn I could try before I bought my horn and I am so pleased that I went with my Yani!
