Saxophone Buyers Guide

The saxophone is a member of the woodwind family and was invented by Adolphe Sax in 1841. It’s probably the most featured solo instrument in pop and jazz and there are many opportunities for beginner saxophonists to perform in concert, jazz and marching bands.

While there are many different instruments in the saxophone family from the soprano to the bass, the alto sax is traditionally the most common instrument for beginners.

It requires less air than a tenor and its smaller key layout makes it more comfortable for younger players hands. In time, with proper study, the technique and skills can easily be transferred to all the members of the sax family as well as clarinet and flute.

Most saxophones are made of yellow brass with a clear lacquer finish. Some instruments are available with bodies made of silver, bronze or gold. These higher-end instruments are more expensive and require special care.

There are 3 categories of saxophones:

Student saxophones ore designed for the beginner and meant to provide an excellent start for the first years of playing. Most student horns are relatively easy to play, produce a pleasant tone and feel comfortable in the beginner’s hands.

Once a student is established and has mastered the fundamentals of good playing, it’s important to provide them with an instrument that will help continue their growth. These horns, while not sporting the fancy handwork of pro models, produce very good tone and keywork similar to that of the highest quality saxophones.
Recommended Intermediate Alto Saxophones Recommended Intermediate Tenor Saxophones

Designed and constructed with the professional musician in mind, these saxophones have excellent response, intonation and tone. They usually are adorned with attractive handwork, like hand-hammered keys and hand engraving. They also are offered in clear or colored lacquer finishes and silver or gold plating.

Other Stuff You’re Definitely Going to Need

Mouthpieces - While all of these items are a matter of taste and preference, beginners should start with a hard rubber mouthpiece with a small tip opening and a low baffle.

Recommended Alto Saxophone Mouthpieces

Ligatures – The ligature is the clamp that holds the reed onto the mouthpiece. Beginners should use a Reverse ligature, which has the screws on top.

Reeds – Reeds play a critical role in the way your sax will sound. The reed vibrates to create the sound in the instrument. New students should be aware that protecting the mouthpiece and reed with a mouthpiece cap could save them the considerable expense of replacing broken reeds and mouthpieces.

Other Accessories

There are accessories available to protect and maintain your sax that will save you time and money in the long run. A neck strap, reed case, mouthpiece pouch and a swab to clean out the inside of your horn, are a good investment.
