Woodwind & Brasswind – 40th Anniversary Celebration
We like to think of the 40th year of Woodwind & Brasswind as an anniversary rather than a birthday. It is a celebration of the partnership we have with you, our customers, who have made these past four decades possible.
Our story begins in 1978 with The Woodwind, a specialty music store in a converted barbershop in South Bend, Indiana. A reputation for selection, price, product knowledge and customer service made us a destination for wind players across the Midwest. Soon a brass component was added. Our impeccable repair services and access to the finest equipment available found jazz musicians, symphony players, band directors and students all crossing paths in the store that would soon be called The Woodwind and the Brasswind.
WWBW expanded product selection to include orchestral strings and the marching and percussion world, and continued the core business of servicing brass and woodwind musicians. We now serve all 50 states and almost 100 countries worldwide. The catalog is mailed monthly to more than 100,000 schools, businesses and households, and the website is accessible anywhere.
Along with many retailers in the 21st century, the store went online-only in 2011 and became Woodwind & Brasswind, or wwbw.com, a truly enviable URL. We were careful to carry forward strong relationships with Bach, Yamaha, Selmer-Paris, Gemeinhardt, Jupiter, D'Addario, Vandoren and many others, and forged new ones with vendors like B&S, P. Mauriat, JodyJazz. More importantly, it was crucial for Woodwind & Brasswind to retain the close personal relationship we had with our customers. We invested in a state-of-the-art call center and committed to deep training for our associates.
From a fourth grader’s first hesitant, giggling breaths into a clarinet to a virtuoso’s masterful cadenza in a packed symphony hall, Woodwind & Brasswind is here to provide the instruments, accessories, advice and support every musician needs. As large as we have become, the one-on-one customer service and sincere involvement with musicians’ goals remains as close as it was in South Bend. It is a point of pride for all of us at Woodwind & Brasswind to retain the feel of a small-town store committed to its community’s musical needs.
Woodwind & Brasswind is just as committed to restoring music education in public schools. As part of that mission, we support DonorsChoose.org, donating more than $1.5 million since 2007 towards musical equipment to programs in need. We sponsor Drum Corps International every year, and are an associate sponsor of Music For All, which supports high school band, orchestra and choral programs across the country.
WWBW also participates in the Jazz Educator’s Network, International Trumpet Guild, International Trombone Guild, and many other trade shows, industry presentations and Music Educator conventions across the country. Our insistence on being part of the landscape of educational, aspiration and professional music making in the United States and across the world hasn’t wavered in 40 years, and we plan on getting even better. Thanks again to everyone for your years of support. We look forward to many more.
Our product catalog varies by country due to manufacturer restrictions. If you change the Ship-To country, some or all of the items in your cart may not ship to the new destination.
