Comments about Alesis Control Hub Premium MIDI Interface with Audio Output:
Overall, good for the price. First unit I purchased was DOA (did not power on under any circumstance). Replacement unit arrived promptly and worked fine. Plug and play w/ computer (Apple MacBook Air, OSX), works w/ iPad under specific circumstances:
With my setup, the Control Hub stereo analog audio output produced distorted digital noise when the unit was connected to an iPad 2 with the Apple Camera Connection Kit by way of a powered USB hub (i.e., iPad connected vial CCK to powered USB hub as the host device, and Alesis Control Hub connected to powered USB hub as a downstream device). However, when I removed the powered USB hub from the setup and connected the Alesis Control Hub directly to the CCK attached to the iPad, the quality of the audio was perfect, no distorted noise at all.
MIDI communication worked fine with or without the powered USB hub in the signal path. Clearly the USB hub was introducing some kind of interference in the digital audio transmission from the iPad to the Alesis Control Hub, but didn't affect MIDI in any way I could detect. When tested my Apple MacBook Air laptop with the Control Hub in this same setup using the powered USB hub, the audio quality was fine, no problems. So operation with an iPad can be tricky and require some troubleshooting to get the precise configuration that works without issues.
