Better than nothing, and better than a few other baritones

from Vancouver, BC

We have more than 40 of these in our rental fleet. They have very consistent quality. It is consistently poor. The thin braces do not withstand hard knocks. The brass is very soft, and takes dents very easily. The valves discolour and stick very quickly. About one example in ten has an intonation quirk like the other reviewer mentioned, either being all sharp or flat. This baritone has a muddy, unclear response. Amati has finally figured out how to properly silver-plate their mouthpieces. The case is decent. As I stated at the start, this is not competitive with most modern baritones, including the new Chinese ones. The only instrument I would consider it over are antiques or Indian-made (non-Besson) baritones. That said, an old Conn, King or York will outplay these easily.

Worst Baritone

from Granger, IN

Site Member

This is the worst Baritone money can buy. I have had this Baritone for 5 years, and I treat all of my instruments like gold. After a year the valves eroded. All the notes Bb and under are flat, and there is no why to fix this no matter what I do. It comes with a 12C mouthpiece which is really small for a baritone. This Baritone is small all around as well, which doesn't help with the tone. The lacquer is peeling off around the tuning slides, and the spit valve leaks. DO NOT buy this Baritone.
