Comments about American DJ AC5PDMX5PRO 5 Pin 5 ft Pro DMX Lighting Cable:
The cable arrived promptly, so Musician's Friend did their part well. But I had a reason to dissect the cable * and immediately saw that the four conductors in this cable were not paired. The cable that is used for DMX512(a) and RS-485 is supposed to be paired, meaning that the + and - signal wires of each pair are continuously twisted with each other, just like the conductors of CAT5 and CAT6 cables. The pairing (twisting) is done to greatly increase the noise immunity of the cable, assuring that any noise that enters the cable will enter both wires of the pair equally, and the differential signaling system used by DMX and RS-485 completely ignores anything that shows up on BOTH wires at the same time. The pairing (twisting) also greatly reduces crosstalk between the pairs of signal wires.
The four signal wires in this cable are not paired and not twisted--they all run parallel.
In addition, the cable is marked as "22 AWG, 1 pair, low cap shielded DMX control cable". This labeling has a couple of problems. First, DMX512A is supposed to have TWO pairs, not one pair. And as pointed out above, the data + and data - signals are NOT paired in this cable.
I will not buy this again, and I recommend that you look at something else when you are buying DMX cables.
* (I was designing a DMX device that needed an input and output cable that I could install my own ends, so this cable was cut in the middle and the two halves were used for input and output cables. I had to do this on two of these extension cables (four ends in total). Two inches of jacket and shield were removed in order to crimp on the connector I needed, and I saw no evidence of pairing in any of the cables)
