Re review submitted earlier today

Comments about Armstrong 800B Intermediate Flute:

My review had errors because I had been misinformed about the difference between my older 303B and the 800 B. I did not realize the 800 B was a solid sterling silver flute. Please disregard my review. thanks & sorry.

An excellent intermediate or back-up flute

By

from Cullman, AL

Comments about Armstrong 800B Intermediate Flute:

I picked up an older model Armstrong at a local consignment music shop by pure luck as a backup flute (I play a professional level Powell.) The older Armstrong has exactly the same specs as the Armstrong 800B - - silver plated body, open holes with Y arms, Sterling headjoint, gold emboucher plate & riser, B-foot, gizmo, inline G. The sound is very open, a teensy bit lighter than my Powell, but still warm & rich. And there is a responsiveness of color. I can play this flute with an strong focused tone or a softer tone. The dynamics are wonderful for an intermediate flute. Intonation has to be modified by the player as with any flute, more so with intermediate flutes as opposed to handmade flutes. ( but even with a handmade professional flute, over-blowing or under-blowing can dramatically alter intonation - - even with very experienced soloists.) I'm an older flutist, so an offset G is more comfortable for me, but for the price I paid for this older flute, the inline is no problem. My first 3 flutes were in-line, so I'm used to it. As mentioned below, the highest F# is a bit resistant, as well as the lowest B, compared to my Powell. And the highest-high C# & D require some practice to play clearly. I actually use the Armstrong to practice on. Then when I play my Powell, everything is easy because I've built up the breath support & embouchure to get those notes clearly. I LOVE this Armstrong flute. It had a lot of hours on it when I bought it, and I've put a lot more hours on it since! If my music repair shop can replace the pads & give it a tune-up for less than a new model, I'll keep practicing on this flute indefinitely. If not, I'll look for a younger or buy a new one, same model (with offset G perhaps) to replace it.

Awesome Armstrong

Comments about Armstrong 800B Intermediate Flute:

When I first got this flute, I immediately noticed how much more comfortable the keys were and how the notes came out easier. People have also told me how the sound is more dark and open. It projects well, and is pretty durable in terms of a couple light knocks against another flute or metal cleaning rod. One problem, however, is the high E and F# are a little trickier on this flute; the high E is more temperamental in terms of amount of air needed to cleanly play it, and the F# doesn't really want to come out on the first attack. I'm a student, though, so that might also just be me. I overall like this flute, as well as the Armstrong line. Would recommend this to others.

Armstrong Model 800B Flute

Comments about Armstrong 800B Intermediate Flute:

I recently purchased this model and must say it is a very good flute for the money. It is well made, affordably priced, & will last a very long time if taken care of. My flute professor played it, and thought it was quite good for the money! To me, it is "open" blowing, and is not too resistant. It would be a great instrument for a serious high school or college player & a professional woodwind player who doubles. I would purchase another one all over again. It's a good one!

Armstrong (USA) 800B Open Hole Flute

By

Comments about Armstrong 800B Intermediate Flute:

I recently purchased one of these from WWBW and am very pleased. It is well made and is a fully American-made instrument. It is 'open' blowing, but is also dark & responsive. I highly recommend this flute due to its quality, price point, & that it is domestically produced, which is great if you need parts, or have questions. Finally, for a high school or college student, this is a great buy. While the competing Gemeinhardt, is a good instrument and is good choice, to me the Armstrong cost a little more, but played better. I would certainly purchase another one without blinking. For my uses, this fit the bill!

Dark and Responsive

Comments about Armstrong 800B Intermediate Flute:

Just like a flute should be. Not a bright sounding instrument at all (or maybe that's my core sound?). I play mainly sax and needed a decent flute. The head is nice and responsive as well... maybe due to the thin wall sterling. I can't see changing more than the headjoint at some point. Recommended.
