These headphones are really amazing. I'll be fully honest with you though. As far as recording there not the best because there not a flat response headphone. they have more bass than what you'll hear on a mix through other speakers. I read as many reviews as i could before getting these and let me tell you all the negitive reviews people have been throwing out on the interweb are either due to the reviewers having no clue what there talking about or they just got a random bum pair. "I got these and there super uncomfortable and dig into my 'normal sized' head". Yeah who's to say your head is normal sized when hundreds of other people didn't have the same problem? i'm just saying if your a big electronic music fan or you dj then BUY THESE! the sound is crisp and the lows are insane. I'm still working through the 100 or so hr burn in time on mine so i'm expecting them to get even better. So don't believe the negitive nancys. these cans are crazy nice and cheap for the quality.
The gold plated plug is nice, the screw on 1/4 plug is nice and pro status, it swivles more than anyone will ever need (except maybe djs). Cord's not long but plenty long for anything but recording in a studio.
Sturdy! and they don't weigh a billion pounds like so many say.
Not crazy expensive esp if you shop around. if you want a sick pair of phones to listen to your electro then throw down 140 bucks for these. it's worth it.

I've owned plenty of A-T gear; these cans are my least favorite. Not particularly comfortable (they clamp my ears), and they just sound clogged and dull to me. The coiled cord is also a headache. My Sony 7506's sound much better, even though the build quality of the Sony's is not nearly as nice. I basically have set the M50's aside and will probably unload them. My studio phones are A-T ATH-A900 studio monitors. The A900's look, sound, and feel great!!! A different world from the ATH-M50's. So, check those out, or forget about clunky cans and get Atrios in-ear monitors instead.

awesome headphones!
These things sound epic! so much clarity and depth which really adds to your mixes. They are pretty bass heavy so i've adjusted to backing off the bass a little in mixes.
Really solid feel. They're very snug and comfortable, i can go hours of mixing without having to take them off.
great for the money!

Bass Player

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

I used to use a small bass rig at home to practice between gigs and rehearsals. I didn't like the setup because I obviously couldn't simulate stage levels. I do use a Pod X3 Live as my preamp/direct box at gigs, so I tried just using the X3 and couple a different pairs of phones at home. Even my high end HD600 Sennheisers would crap out on the low B. I was ready to give up on headphones until I tried the M50s. These reproduce the lower registers at very good levels with no problems. Obviously my Sennheisers are much flatter and more accurate, but the AT's do bass guitar very, very well. They are a little pricey and can get a little warm after a couple of hours, but I'm very please over all.

Nice Cans!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

I've been a Senheiser & Beyer phones guy since the 70's. I wanted a closed back phone for live sound use, that was more portable and cheaper than HD580's. I wasn't expecting to be so impressed with these. These phones sound amazing. Considering the price, they're a steal.

A little overhyped by some

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

Overall, pretty good headphone for the price, surely you wont be disappointed.
Nice feeling jack. Headphones, I don't know not too many features.
So, after trying many different types of headphones, these are quite nice. They are very detailed and people say after the "burn-in" they'll sound nicer. I can say after listening to them for an hour you certainly get more used to them and start liking them more.

First Impressions were that the bass was good volume but seemed a little muddy and not detailed. Which why some people are complaining that they are bass heavy when they most certainly aren't in my opinion. The mids are really nice. The highs seem to shrill a bit. It's all preferance. Though they do really sound nice.

For example for people coming from Senn HD280's you'll definately love these more.

They feel decently comfy, but we'll have to see.
The price could be better, but they are worth their money.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

These were an upgrade from a pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pro (which are a 4 star headphone IMO). These do not enhance the bass like the HD280s did, and are ideally flat on the mids/highs. After several hours of listening and tracking a complete song with them, I am VERY pleased with what fifty more dollars over the HD280s got me.

    Disapointed

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

I've just bought them yesterday. I've been working with sennheiser eH350, which I dont like cause they are bassy, Behringer hpx2000- no like because they are uncomfortable and accentuate the mid-range, american audio HP700- they just don't sound right. I bought this AT and when I get home I found that they really colour a lot with the bass response. It's really, really hard to squeeze a natural sound from them. I can't beleive I could get faster and better Eq's, mixes, and masters- broadcast quality- out of my cheap cheap cheap and flimsy Motorola MOTOROKR EA2 cellphone earplugs. I don't know why they are so well rated. They are uncomfortable and by 20 mins of use you start sweating annoyingly. I want my money back and try another ones- maybe AKG 240 are way better. Bad for me.

For the money, these have got to be the best headphones. They trash beats studios in terms of sound quality. While these headphones don't exactly have a flat response, they're quite near it. There's just a slight boost in the bass.
The headphones look real nice and feel very durable. The ear pieces and swivel around in most directions, which is a cool feature. The best part about these guys is the price. I would buy again.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

The amount of detail they provide are scary..at first they sound shrill and harsh, very bright. But after 6 hours of burning or so..this is what I can report. I don't hear a smudge of high frequencies for high hats, but the individual hit hat cymbals hitting each other..so clear it's just amazing. I can hear strings flapping against the frets on acoustic guitar and bass guitar. I can even hear finger picking noises and snare drums sound wonderfully complex and detailed with a good amount of the actual snare into it. The fit is snug, although a bit tight, and isolates outside noise well. The design is beautiful, modern and shows this is something of great quality. Bass is great and there is more than enough even for the most hardcore bass drum or bass guitar, the best thing is that it's got great transient response so the bass is not muddy, but incredibly accurate. These cans transform every bit of signal into true frequencies. They are very sensitive to EQ, and can make your brain go fuzzy for a while if you crank the bass at certain right frequencies. I would pay more for these..I'm rediscovering my entire music record again with details I've never heard before!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

I spent an afternoon in my local music shop testing moniters. But each sounded so different than the other I was left frustrated. Then I saw the AT Studio Monitor phones. I own several of their mics and headphones, so I know their quality is outstanding, so I ordered these new phones as mixing moniters. I was anything BUT disappointed. The clarity of each frequency is so close and intimate with your ears that it takes your breath away. I could also tell that they did not "fluff" the sound, trying to make the mix sound better than it was. I hate dishonest monitors. I used these AT's exclusively before sending off my album for mastering. In short, these AT's don't just work, they work very well for a better price than most.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

Read a LOT of positive comments on numerous websites regarding these headphones. Took a chance without actually using a set and ordered them for a very good price from Musicians Friend. The phones are very comfy and I don't think anyone would have a problem wearing them for an extended period of time. They also work pretty well at reducing extraneous noise. The BEST thing about these phones is the sound quality ... smooth and warm, very balanced across the spectrum and I believe a very true, flat response. And as they continue to be "burned in" I am noticing the sound quality just getting better and better. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

So what is it about the low frequency? After reading one review, I was afraid that these might have too much low end. NO Way. However the first thing I played just happened to have more low end than any of the 800 songs I have, so I thought it was true. Not true. Choice of material. When you actually feel the kick drum in the mix for the first time it stops you. Then I realized if the kick drum would be overmixed this headset would let you know it. Others wouldn't. Other stuff which had a light low end I could feel it immediately and I could hear my old mixes perfectly for the first time and wasn't questioning if it was my hearing.

I've had brands like Sony, Technics,Allan & Heath, and the first thing I noticed with these headphones was the crisp sound. Right off the bat the sound was bright and crisp. Had never picked that up with other headphones. They aren't the sturdiest feeling ones, maybe I just think that because they are the lightest ones I've ever held. Nice clean finish to them as well. I would definetly give these a shot if in the market for new monitors. Price is good and quality is great. Will buy them again, maybe another pair to have one for school and for home.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones:

The ATH-M50 headphones are an excellent set of cans, make no mistake. Yes, they are somewhat heavy and a little tight on the head, but you get used to them after a while. I've had my pair over a year now and at first I thought they might have been a little too bass-heavy. After the burn-in period, they've smoothed out considerably. The high frequencies, which someone on here said were dull, are definitely more present now. They are very accurate, like an excellent set of monitors. For the money, they are a steal.

As a studio musician, I spend a lot of time with headphones on. I do a lot of comparing with my monitors. These cans are not biased. They do not have that box, mid-range thing going on. Smooth highs, great lows. If the music sounds good in these head phone, it sounds good on my monitors.

I bought these because of the Audio Technica brand name. Little did I know the poor quality synthetic material used on these cans disintegrated in less than 6-Mos., rendering them unusable. Sound wise, the most I could say is that their sound quality was mediocre and certainly not up to par. In addition they are heavy and cumbersome. I own or have owned various professional brand headphones (mainly AKG's & Senheisser's) and, in my opinion, these have been the worst. I believe they do not withstand tropical or high ozone sunny weather conditions.
