Music sound is super and reasonably priced.
This is a very good student trumpet. If properly
maintained, it should satisfy a beginner for
many years before needing a better horn. Like
nearly all inexpensive trumpets, it plays flat
on several notes ( use the tuning slides and lip
up the D and E on the staff ). For more advanced
players, it can make a nice practice horn if
nothing else. Worth the meager price.
We have purchased 3 of these trumpets for our nonprofit organization. We obtain band instruments through donations and repair them before donating them to schools in need. When we receive cash donations, we look to WWBW to purchase inexpensive but durable instruments. The first time I saw a Brasswind trumpet, I thought there must have been a mistake. Its weight, sound, and intonation were equal to, if not better than, many American-made beginner trumpets. These are made in Viet Nam but are far superior to the Chinese-made horns that frequently come through our shop. My only criticism is the case. It is strong and sturdy but it is made of wood and will wear out more quickly than a molded plastic case. I recommend this horn for any beginning student. I see no reason to rent or pay $400+ when this quality horn is available for less than half the price. This trumpet will last as long as the more expensive horns and perform just as well.
How much horn can you expect for $179? Well I got way more than I expected with the Brasswind Model II Student Bb Trumpet Standard. Mechanically excellent, all valves and slides move as well or better than most trumpets I have played through the years. The fixed third valve slide ring and first valve thumb saddle are a nice touch at this price point and are quite comfortable. Valve alignment seems to be very accurate. This trumpet is extremely playable with a good resonant core sound and very good intonation. Not quite as resonant an my Bach Strad LT180S-72, but at $2720 less, it seems to be a spectacular value that could serve an aspiring trumpet player very well for a very long time. I bought this to see if it would be a horn I could be comfortable recommending it to my students and was extremely surprised to find that I will be happy to personally keep it as a backup horn. The case that comes with it seems to be well made with tight tolerances. The included 7C mouthpiece seems well made and finished, but each player will undoubtedly find the mouthpiece that gives them the sound and response they desire. I am happy to give this trumpet a five star rating an full recommendation with no reservations!
My son plays the saxophone, but was interested in learning to play trumpet. His band director recommended another brand from Woodwind & Brasswind, but this trumpet caught my eye. It arrived quickly, and my son loved the big "trumpet" box so much that he still has it in his room. Now, his first couple of days sounded a bit squeaky, as he figured out the proper embouchure, but by the time a week had gone by, he sounded pretty good. He says the valves move easily and it's very comfortable to play. He found it very easy to figure out how to make it sound good, and is very pleased with the instrument. This trumpet has a nice warm tone to it, and it has been a really good instrument for my kid. He's had it for a month now, and it's a pleasure to listen to him practice. The case is nice, sturdy, and should be durable. Overall, this is a great little horn!
There is a dirty little secret about trumpets. This low priced, lacquered trumpet with play as high and as sweet or brassy as any on the market. The valves as great, the horn feels great and blows even greater. If you want a great horn this is it. If you want a big name, silver or gold plate and all the rest of the window dressing, pay many times more, but they won't play or sound any better.
