An excellent foundation for a woodwind section, the Contra Alto clarinet creates beautiful textures when mixed with bassoons and bass clarinets.
The Buffet Crampon Prestige Contra-Alto is a high quality clarinet made from grenadilla wood with undercut tone holes. The result is a beautiful tone and quick response. Keys and posts are power forged, pre-plated in copper, and silver-plated which creates strong keys that will shine for years to come. To accomplish a clear tone and sound throughout the range, a double octave key with high Bb and half hole speaker vent are employed. The rich, dark sound of the Buffet Crampon Prestige Contra-Alto Clarinet blends beautifully within a clarinet section.

Comments about Buffet Crampon 1553 Prestige Eb Contra Alto Clarinet:
Buffet has done it! After so many years of Selmer and Leblanc dominating the contra clarinet world, I think Buffet has finally created a truly fine competitor! The instrument is truly a work of art melding together the sleek finesse and technical prowess of the bass clarinet, with the beautiful chocolaty sound and middle range of the Bb contra. It speaks amazingly (and evenly) in all three octaves, and I had no problem navigating the break on this instrument. The tone is clear with no obvious stuffy notes (that I have discovered as of yet). The tennons are all capped for a stronger resistance to cracking. My favorite thing about the instrument so far is that it has been designed to take a standard bass clarinet mouthpiece! The instrument is somehow physically smaller than the Selmer Eb contra, so I assume that Buffet has altered both the inner and outer bore dimensions to allow the use of a smaller mouthpiece, and yet somehow remain in the same key with a beautiful sound. This is wonderful, as it allows for a much wider selection of both mouthpieces and reeds for performers of this instrument to utilize! The only thing to be wary of are the three bridge keys. Without careful observation during assembly, the bridge keys are easily bent or jammed together, as they have been designed very small, and are extremely close together as well as ridiculously sensitive to their respective keys. Nonetheless, I believe that Buffet has created a truly fine addition to their line of amazing instruments. Bravo!
