What’s the difference between a Trumpet and Cornet? In terms of sound, the Cornet carries a more mellow tone and is considered less ‘harsh’ sounding compared to a trumpet. Physically, a cornet has a bit smaller of a bore (tubing diameter) which is the key difference. This tubing design is conical in nature meaning the tubing gradually progresses from small to large rather than a more dramatic flair from small to large found in a trumpet. Cornets have many applications both in traditional music and modern performance. In the 40’s and 50’s the cornet was a mainstay in the traditional jazz (or Dixieland) scene due to its mellow and flowing tone.
Today the cornet has a practical application in the British Brass Bands as well as many pieces of orchestral and concert band literature. Physically the cornet uses a very similar mouthpiece to a trumpet, as well as an identical fingering system, making the cornet a very easy instrument to use as a double for trumpet players.
