The most popular of D’Addario’s reeds are Rico by D’Addario and Royal by D’Addario. Rico by D'Addario are unfiled and their profile and blank are on the thinner side. They are probably the most famous student reed. Almost every clarinetist or saxophonist has a childhood memory of that orange Rico box. They are flexible and easy to play, and are economically priced.
Royal by D'Addario have a thin profile and blank like the Rico, but they are filed. They offer the same response as the Ricos, but with an increased clarity. Rico by D’Addario supports the entire clarinet and saxophone families, even including bass sax and contrabass clarinet. Royal by D’Addario is offered in the more common instruments.
Reserve reeds feature a shorter vamp, rounded tip corners and a standard tip thickness. They are made of naturally grown cane from D'Addario's own foreign fields. They come in boxes of 10 and packs of 2, and are available in half strengths from 2.0 to 4.5, along with 3.5+ and 4.0+ strengths.
Mitchell Lurie reeds, like the Rico, are available in filed and unfiled versions. They are warm and round sounding, especially the filed versions. The unfiled reeds retain flecks of cane bark and have a character all their own. Both filed and unfiled versions have a thin tip and a thick spine. For Bb clarinet only.
The Hemke brand is available for baritone, tenor, alto and soprano saxophone. They tend to have a darker sound, making them perfect for classical saxophone. They are also often preferred by jazz musicians who like filed reeds with a thin tip and short vamp.
D’Addario also offers the La Voz brand. It is available for the full range of common saxophones and clarinets. They have a clear and powerful tone, which combined with their uncommon flexibility, make them a popular reed for jazz.
D’Addario’s Plasticover reeds are ideal for school band programs, especially marching band. They feature a plastic coating that increases durability and resistance to bad weather. They have a bright and present sound with excellent projection, and they last longer than ordinary reeds. They are made for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, along with Bb clarinet.
These top-quality reeds are designed for the jazz musician. Made in third strengths rather than in half strengths, the player can really hone in on precise preferences. They have the thickest spine and blank of D'Addario's jazz reeds, a design that results in a lively and colorful sound.
