OVERVIEW

Milled solid rod rubber mouthpiece.

The Select Jazz line is milled not molded, from solid rod rubber, using D'Addario's precise computer-controlled mouthpiece-making technology. The result is a mouthpiece with a classic sound and response, with even intonation across the entire range of the saxophone. The inspiration for these mouthpieces was derived from the great vintage mouthpieces of the first half of the 20th century, but with modern precision milling.

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

Recommended by sax teacher and I used it for two weeks. Sounds much better and it describes what I want out of hard rubber mouthpiece. I have tried other hard rubber mouthpiece and metal mouthpiece. The sound and music I played using this mouthpiece were much smoother, soft when needed and jazz sound came out much more fuller without high pitch sound. I would recommend other sax players to try this mouthpiece.

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

So the "gold standard" for alto saxophone sound and mouthpieces appears to be the "Meyer" sound and I guess I've heard it from the likes of Cannonball Adderley and Phil Woods, but I'd have to say I do not think those two sound a lot alike. And I'm not a proponent of saying, "Buy this and you'll sound like them." But on its own merits, the D'Addario Jazz alto mouthpiece produces a lush, "buttery" sound with a good content of upper partials, ie., a little edge, depending on other parts of your setup. I like the 6 opening, Alexander DC 2.5 reeds and I play a MKVI and Yamaha custom Z. I use the VanDoren Optimum ligature most often. Dave Liebman quotes Joe Allard as saying, "It should feel good to blow." and that's what I feel playing this mouthpiece. It produces a warm, easy tone, very good intonation and its design is clean and well made. The best part? It goes for under $200 and I would consider it a strong contender among alto mouthpieces in that range. Also, I typically order about three mouthpieces and keep one, but I only ordered only one of these and it hit the mark. I agree that it fits tightly compared to new Meyers, Jody Jazz HR and VanDoren V16 and the reason that's important is that I can no longer play those now that I have had a thinner neck cork installed. But that's OK, I think I'll play this one a long time.

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

This product arrived as advertised- clearly well-made with even rails and no flaws of any kind. It has great projection and a bright sound but not so bright that it can't be used in a big band or swing band setting. I chose a 6M, which what's a bit to open for me but would be great for someone who plays more frequently.

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

This is a very good mouthpiece for the price. It captures that vintage Meyer vibe and sounds consistent and in tune throughout the range of the horn. The only problem with this mouthpiece is the shank. It is so tight on the cork that you may find it necessary to sand the cork down (you will find similar comments from other users, if you are inclined to do a quick search).

High end mouthpiece for the masses

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

This is fantastic mouthpiece. First of all, three words: solid rod rubber. This mouthpiece is milled from solid rubber, not seamed together from a sheet, which I think makes a big difference in how the mouthpiece resonates. Secondly, D?Addario (the way it was explained to me) is using a new laser precision milling process which makes every mouthpiece exactly the same. That is what initially intrigued me about these mouthpieces: that I could direct a student to one of them and not worry that the rails, tip etc. still needed to be adjusted. I looked at a handful of these mouthpieces, and they all had perfect rails, tips and tables. Lastly, I?ve got some expensive mouthpieces, and this mouthpiece rivals these easily. In fact, I?ve been playing this mouthpiece exclusively on alto for the past several months and I love it! It?s extremely reed friendly and very easy to play. Like a good mouthpiece should, it enables me to realize the sound I hear in my head and not require me to do anything fancy to acquire that sound. For students and professionals alike, I HIGHLY recommend this mouthpiece!!

        Much better than a Meyer

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

The build quality of these mouthpieces is FAR better than that of the current stock Meyer. Everyone I know who plays professionally in the Seattle area who played on a Meyer has switched over to one of these, and there's very good reason. Seriously, if you play a Meyer right now, you should just go out and buy one of these instead. Same general design, but much better executed.

Comments about D'Addario Woodwinds Select Jazz Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

I received this mouthpiece a few days ago and I don't want to stop playing on it! It's a great, free-blowing mouthpiece that gets a great, even response over the whole range... my altissimo range pops right out and my low C-Bb speak clearly, even at a low dynamic. I'm very happy with this purchase!
