OVERVIEW

Classic Fender tube sound in a portable package.

One of the most popular amplifiers of all time lives again in the ’57 Custom Champ. Renown for it’s flexibility, ease-of-use and knockout tone this is the classic sound heard on thousands of recordings. A wide variety of playable tones inhabit this hand-wired performer—from crisp, classic cleans to naturally compressed overdrive that responds remarkably to guitar volume and picking dynamic changes.

The Fender® 5F1 circuit used in the ’57 Custom Champ has become legendary for its heightened dynamic response and sweet sounding tube overdrive when pushed. A 12AX7 preamp tube matched to a classic 6V6 power amp tube generates this in-demand overdrive. When the volume is cranked, this little wonder sings with the natural compression and rich even-order harmonics of a power tube working at peak output in Class A topology. The 8-in. Weber Alnico speaker stays true to the classic Champ sound, compressing to create fat tone at higher levels while more than ably reproducing the raunchy tones found at the top of the amp’s volume knob. The hand-wired circuit includes newly sourced yellow coupling capacitors chosen for their authentically vintage Fender tone—sparkly cleans and creamy overdrive with smooth top end and round mids.

Onstage this amp looks great, retaining classic Champ visual appeal—lacquered tweed, chickenhead knob, leather handle and 1/4-in inputs for low or high output instruments are all here. In the studio, the 5-watt design means you’ll be able to explore the full range of available tones without overloading sensitive microphones (or your ears). Updated components, hand-wired craftsmanship and a classic circuit design all combine to create the ’57 Custom Champ, a style-spanning performer. Includes a protective cover.

Best Sounding Amp I've Played

By Me

from Connecticut, USA

Comments about Fender '57 Custom Champ 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Amp:

This amp rocks. It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. I own a Blues Junior Tweed, and this thing blows it away, so, I'm not sure what the prior reviewer was hearing. It's not overly loud, but that's the point, you can turn it all the way up, and get overdrive that no overdrive pedal, or either of my other three tube amps can replicate. There might be Champ clones out there that are less expensive, but, it's hard to judge what I'm hearing on online videos; so, that and the warranty made this worth the price to me. I recommend it.

I would not buy this product again

Comments about Fender '57 Custom Champ 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Amp:

I own a Fender Blues Junior. In my opinion, for half the price, you get a tube amp that's more versatile and sounds just as good, particularly if you get the tweed edition. You're paying for the history behind the amp more than anything else.

Comments about Fender '57 Custom Champ 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Amp:

Playing guitar again after a very long break. Started with Laney Cub 10 with tube and speaker mods. Added a Blues Junior to the collection. Was considering building a champ clone kit just for fun. Bought this amp on a hunch. Telecaster is the go to. Add in Strat and Epi Les Paul. For home/studio use wonderful sound. Quiet. Build is solid. Just great. Should have bought this first. Resale on this is far superior to kits. I thought price was competitive to many kits once resale price was considered. Thanks MF!

Comments about Fender '57 Custom Champ 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Amp:

High quality components, quiet, classic Fender tone. Sounds fantastic with Stratocaster, Jazzmaster, and Les Paul. Super clean tones and gritty growl. Sounds great just controlling with guitar volume. Perfect recording amplifier.

Comments about Fender '57 Custom Champ 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Amp:

This is a first-impression review. I own this amp, but no electric guitar (yet) I bought the amp from Musician's Friend. I had given up on electric guitars and just picked on my acoustic from time-to-time. My kid(s) are/will be taking music lessons and I have gotten the desire to play again. First thing I wanted to do was get a quality, small amp and the Champ is perfect. I wanted a small amp that was high-quality that wasn't going to be cumbersome and something my kids could one day use. I have tried out 5 guitars plugged directly to the amp with no effect pedals. A Gibson 137, Gibson 335, Gibson SG, Fender American Strat with noiseless pickup and an American Telecaster with Texas Specials. The Strat I played was horrible, the Gibson SG was way to clean. The Gibson 137 and 335 had their sweet spots with the amp depending on the volume, but the Telecaster sounded amazing with the bridge pickup in every volume setting. It is my opinion that this amp is best paired with an honest, working-man's Telecaster. On The Gibsons, especially the SG the tone at the bottom end of the volume was very dull and didn't sharpen up till the volume was raised substantially. The Telecaster with the Bridge pickup was amazing with the Amp played at its highest volume setting. Disclaimer: The Telecaster was the last guitar I played and by then the tubes were plenty warm and I could smell that fresh new tube odor emitting from the amp. I will close with this, it's a great amp, a pure tonal machine, but keep in mind it's old-timey technology. The Tone and sound you want has to do so much with the position that you strike the strings and the volume setting. The amp sounds very differently depending on the volume setting.

Comments about Fender '57 Custom Champ 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Amp:

I use the Champ as a small practice amp. I was amazed at the clear and responsive tones. Play softly of attack the strings to get the tone you want. I play with a vintage 58' tele. I have finally found the perfect combination. I tried it with a DS-1 distortion and TS-9, but the bass was a little heavy. As you have heard in many videos, the champ unleashes terrific hunks of mild-dirty tones at high volume. I simply place a pillow in front of the speaker to reduce the volume.
