The Flugelhorn can be heard in music genres ranging from Jazz to the orchestral stage. How does its sound differ than the Trumpet? It’s usually described as darker and mellower, and more of an alto voice compared to the soprano voice of the trumpet. What makes that flugelhorn mellower compared to a trumpet is the combination of tubing sizes and bell size/material. The flugelhorn may start out a little smaller than a trumpet, but will have a much wider bell throat which produces this mellow sound. Because the flugelhorn has a nearly identical mouthpiece and the exact same valve/fingering system, trumpet players will easily be able to double on the flugelhorn.

Many contemporary players will direct the popularity of the flugelhorn sound to musician Chuck Mangione and the classic song “Feels so Good” which he recorded in the 1980’s. While not musically challenging or technically difficult, this song illustrated everything that was great about the mellow flugelhorn sound.
