Much Better Than You Would Think

Comments about Fox Model 520 English Horn:

Have played the earlier version of this model in a major New York theater for about 10 years now. First bought it because I didn't want to expose my primary instruments to the relatively hostile environment in this orchestra pit, where it is always very dry and temperatures can change suddenly through a 10 degree range during a performance. I expected that a plastic instrument would play like, well, a plastic instrument. Surprise. This is actually a very nice horn and needs no apologies for its plastic body. The workmanship is excellent, and that seems to be far more important than the body is NOT a cheaply made instrument. Scale is generally good, and it plays reasonably well out of the box with the supplied bocals. Like any other English Horn it will improve greatly when you find the right bocal for it, and you probably won't play the Fox bocals very long, but you won't feel like a fool while you're looking for the ultimate crook. Like any other instrument there are individual variations and some examples will fit you better than others, but I've tried 5 over the years and all of them were at least reasonably good. My colleagues in the orchestra tell me that they hear no obvious difference among my Laubin, my Howarth, and this instrument unless I play them back-to-back. Re-assuring in one sense, but slightly alarming when you think that this one costs half what I paid for either of the others.
Over about 10 years of hard use this instrument has required exactly zero repair work other than an occasional adjustment. I would recommend it without reservation for anyone who plays in a pit or outdoors. Also, even if its robust nature is not a concern, anyone who needs an English Horn and wants to keep the cost down, should look very carefully at this instrument.

Comments about Fox Model 520 English Horn:

I recently received this English horn as an early birthday present and I'm amazed at how it sounds!! It definitely had a wood-quality sound to it even though it is made of plastic! This is a great instrument and the price is very low for how great it is! I now love fox instruments and plan to get a fox oboe sometime in the future! Buy this English horn!
