OVERVIEW

Classic tonewood pairing and hardware accompaniment on a modernized cutaway version of one of Gibson's most popular models.

A guitar at the leading edge of the acoustic folk boom of the late ’50s and ’60s, the Hummingbird was also at the forefront of an entirely new breed of flat-top dreadnoughts for Gibson. Introduced in 1960 by a company long famous for its “round-shouldered” dreadnoughts, such as the J-45 and Southern Jumbo, this big, 16-1/4 in. wide-shouldered dreadnought hit the competition straight on, and became an instant classic in the process. This 2018 Hummingbird Pro CE acoustic-electric model is crafted with a solid mahogany back and sides, solid Sitka spruce top, and one-piece mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard. The Hummingbird Pro EC packs premier tonewoods that mirror those of its predecessor from 1960. A scalloped advanced X-brace, hide-glued dovetail neck joint, and bone nut keep it all ringing, rich and resonant, while a Fishman Prefix Plus-T pickup system takes it all to a bigger audience when you need to plug in and be heard.

Meanwhile, a vintage-sunburst finish in hand-sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer, marquetry back stripe, multi-ply top binding and rosette, split-parallelogram inlays, and double-point tortoiseshell pickguard keep it all looking as sweet and sultry as the vintage Hummingbird that inspired it. All guitars come with a blue-plush-lined Gibson hardshell case, owner’s manual, and Gibson Gold Warranty.

Long a favorite of frontmen and singer-songwriters, equally at home pounding out the rhythm amid a rockin’ electric band or taking the lead in an acoustic context, the Hummingbird has proven surprisingly versatile, and has set the pace at the center of several notable country, rock, blues and folk acts.

Now the Hummingbird Pro EC, crafted by the luthiers in Gibson’s acoustic facility in Bozeman, MT, carries on the tradition. Designed both as a tribute to this 50-year-old classic, and as a no-nonsense, high-quality acoustic for today’s working musician, the Hummingbird Pro EC lands at a special price for a solid-wood flat-top of this pedigree.

Hardshell case included.
