OVERVIEW

Crackerjack quality at a dandy of a price!

Reimagining the popular œRex parlor guitars of the ˜40s and ˜50s, the Jim Dandy Flat Top offers a restrained black finish, updating the look while retaining the classic Gretsch acoustic sound. Small-bodied but full of tone and œcut, perfect for both picked and fingerstyle playing, the Jim Dandy Flat Top will be a welcome addition to your guitar collection.

The non-cutaway agathis body creates warm, round tone with a lively response due to the X-braced agathis top, while the topload rosewood bridge with compensated synthetic bone saddle ensures even intonation along the length of the neck. Joining the body at the 12th fret, the 24 scale "C"-shape nato neck bears a comfortable, smooth-playing rosewood fingerboard with vintage-style frets and pearloid dot inlays and contains a dual-action truss rod to compensate for temperature or humidity shifts. A 1950' style Gretsch 3x3 headstock holds vintage style open-gear die-cast tuning machines and proudly bears a vintage Gretsch "T"-roof logo.

Nickel-plated hardware along with screened white body binding and rosette completes the Jim Dandy Flat Top parlor guitar' visual package. Ideal for songwriting, practice or even as a travel guitar, this little wonder is great for beginners or seasoned pros alike. Comfortable to play, and full of woody vintage tone with full-sounding bass, the Jim Dandy will inspire hours of playing joy.

Purchased two of these from here and had to return both...They are great little playing and sounding acoustics but the first one Musicians Friend sent me was definitely used and was missing a string and had imperfections all around(dings/scratches)..So, I returned it and ordered another..Same deal..This one came with all the strings but the paint job was horrible.Blotches/scratches/imperfections all the way around..I understand its not a 1000 guitar but even the cheapest squiers/epiphones have some quality control on the paint..Come on Gretsch get it together

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9520 Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

I really was surprised when i opened the box and first held this guitar. It took a few hours to adjust to room temperature and hold a tunning, the next day was when i noticed how good this thing sounded and felt, after fully adjusting to room temperature....it feels better than my Martin (before lowering the strings on Martin) all solid wood guitar and sounds as good in its own little way.... The guitar was set up perfectly for me and is probably the best ever acoustic I owned in the way it was set up, feel and sound combined....I still use the Martin, but they are different sounding good in their own ways....

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9520 Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

Open box purchase but could have been new based on condition, packaging, etc.. Little trouble keeping in tune, but will let guitar acclimate and put on new strings - see what happens.

Its a neat little guitar to keep in the corner making it easy to pick up and play.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9520 Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

The Jim Dandy will work great as my travel guitar. I usually travel 3 or 4 times a year. Taking a full sized guitar is not really doable. Besides my full size git is a Taylor and we know what airlines do to those (search youtube).

Is this a great 5 star guitar? No. It sounds great for a small guitar. It's very playable, good action right out of the box. It does need to be tuned a bit each time you play.

The JD is supposedly a copy of 1930 guitars. The construction pretty much reflects that. It looks like it was spray painted black. It's obvious the white stripes were hand painted. I bought a blem from MF and I can't find the blemish. I think the 'new' price is a bit high for this git. The blem price was good.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G9520 Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic Guitar:

I returned to playing guitar about a year ago after a long hiatus. My previous guitar was a concert size and I had played ukulele in between, so my Seagull dreadnaught felt huge to me. I had been looking for something smaller and also inexpensive, since I planned to use it for travel and playing around the campfire. When I saw this Jim Dandy open box/blem for about a third off the regular price, I jumped on it. The blemish turns out to be a funky spot in the paint on the side of the neck, not at all noticeable and nothing that affects playing. Other that that, the build and finish a quite nice. It looks like what it is meant to look like: A slightly funky, old-time working-class guitar.

Setup was pretty good out of the box. The action could maybe be lowered a hair. So far I have not changed strings but I may experiment with some different kinds in the future.

It is one fun little guy to play! With the smaller size I can play it while lounging on the sofa, sitting on a log, or wherever. The sound is not as rich and warm as the cedar-top dreadnaught, but I didn't expect it to be. It's not unpleasant, though. Depending on how you play it, it has a nice, slightly jangly tone that lends itself well to blues (not that I am very good at playing blues) as well as roots/America music or old-school folk and country.

One small detail I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere: The strap peg is white plastic, not metal. The white color is good with the overall color scheme of the guitar, and it's probably durable enough, but I may swap it for a metal one at some point.

Overall, it more than met my expectations. I does exactly what I hoped it would do and I am very satisfied with it.

I had this little gem for three weeks now, and it is still a joy to play. It's attractive, convenient and has a retro feel that reminds me of my brother's old Stella student guitar from years ago (without the excessive string to neck height). Was looking at Little Martins and Baby Taylor's for a long time; but this Jim Dandy G9520 fit my budget, and all of my expectations! Also, Musicians Friend hooked me up with a nice bag in which this guitar fits! I am very satisfied with this purchase.

I tuned this right out of the box and began playing it. I love it. Stays in tune. Finger action good. Strings not too high above frets. Frets do need a little filing on the edges, but that's to be expected in this level of guitar.

My initial choice was to go with the Little Martin, but given it's price point, I decided to give this one a try. This is my first parlor guitar and I couldn't be happier about my purchase. It sounds fantastic for its size and I enjoy playing it even more than my Ovation.
In my opinion, the only thing it lacks is an additional guitar strap pin on the body, but it's nothing that can't be changed easily.

This guitar channels the great small boxes from the 50's.It has the nice boxey tone and sound they had in spades.Very cool and well made although may have small blemishes.I like it a lot.

I had been looking at this little guy for some time now.The reviews were pretty good. The first one they sent was defective, the bridge was lifting off the top.Musicians friend quickly and in a friendly manner replaced the guitar. The second one was really nice.its easy to play and has that old time box sound you want from these.

This little guitar s incredible. It sounds like the old blues guitars from the 40s. The action is very low, but it makes it extremely easy to play. It comes set up like that from factory.
It is also a beautiful guitar. Everywhere I take it, people start asking questions and express how good does it look.

WOW, what an excellent little axe! I bought this as a "bang around" guitar that I can take to the beach, take camping, and just use so I don't have to bring my very expensive Martin around and it has blown me away. It was set up perfectly right from the box and it feels and sounds like a guitar worth much much more. I love the vintage vibe of it's so much fun to play that my usual guitars have been taking a backseat to the this frugal guitar.

Normally I don't buy painted acoustic guitars, but this time I had saved up almost enough Back Stage Pass to buy this one outright. So, I did.
It's an amazing little guitar. Arrived almost playable, needed only a little truss rod tweaking (wrench included). Action is acceptable, could use a tweak there, too, eventually. Only a couple of negatives, and really, at this price these shouldn't even be mentioned.... The tuning machines are junk (oh well), yet it is coming around and holding tune better. The bridge and the saddle are going to be the weak links on this guitar. The saddle lets the string spacing kind of wander a bit a cheap and easy Saturday project to upgrade and replace. The pass through for the strings is made of a softer wood, I think, than it's intended to look like, there's a little "saw through" where the strings are under tension. NOW, those little quibbles out of the way. THIS THING ROCKS! Sounds like a Grand Auditorium, resonates like crazy, Has amazing sustain, and has a great tonal balance (with the original strings!). I've got it tuned in Open D right now and it is an absolute dream to play. This one has a great fret board, flat and even, nice frets, and a playable neck. No buzz. The finish is kind of hokey, but that's OK, adds character, and this thing has tons of character. I'm going to find me a nice piece of hemp rope for a strap and hit the third box car, midnight train (the start of my world tour).

I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend that became a gift for myself. I learned my first chords and scales on this guy more than a year ago. I got addicted and bought 3 more guitars and a bass.

After the strings streched for a week this guitar stayed in tune very very well. I barely ever tune it anymore, and still play it almost daily. Would be nice with a cutout but I love the compensated saddle. Action is a little bit high and I get a bit of buzz but overall really really good compared to other guitars at this price.
