A Great Starter Accordion

Comments about Hohner 12 Bass Entry Level Piano Accordion:

The Hohner Hohnica is a nice little compact 12-bass piano accordion. Its two banks of alto reeds yield a nice musette sound. The bass reeds are clear and punchy. The full size piano keys make it easy for pianists to transition. I have eighteen of these accordions which get used daily in my public school music program for 3rd and 4th graders. They are rugged and stand up to lots of use. In my opinion, the Hohner instruments work better than other brands you're likely to find. The bass mechanisms are relatively sound with buttons spaced comfortably for small and large fingers. Larger hands may find the bass strap a little confining. It is adjustable, though. The nylon straps that come with the instrument are definitely geared toward smaller players. If you're an adult with a medium or large frame, you may have to order other straps. The repair I make most often is reattaching the the bellows snap strap. It tends to unscrew itself with lots of use. But it is also an easy repair, requiring only a small screwdriver. The quality is assuredly not the same as high-end European accordions, but for the price, you'll not hear any complaints from me. I think Hohner has struck a nice balance between quality and economy. Bottom line is that it sounds good and it feels good to play. I recommend it without hesitation to beginning students who are just learning to play the piano accordion and for experienced musicians (pianists) who want a small portable instrument on which to jam.
