OVERVIEW

Virtuoso pieces in the styles of Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed.

"The most amazing guy I know on the guitar. He can play anything I know, only better." - Chet Atkins, CGP (music legend)
"If you like my playing, you should hear Richard Smith! The world champion!"- Tommy Emmanuel, CGP (two-time Grammy nominee)

When Richard Smith picks up a guitar, audiences watch in rapt amazement as his fingers dance over fretboard and strings, and listen in delight as melody and groove fill the room. Now, Richard makes some of his most dazzling arrangements accessible to aspiring pickers on this technique-intensive lesson.

After a brief on-the-beat and off-the-beat training session to help you develop independent thumb and fingers, Richard launches into his Happy Blues. You'll learn how to add an exciting array of creative variations on the standard 12-bar blues progression using riffs and jazz-like chords while maintaining a solid groove on a single bass string.

After exercises to get you started on alternating bass, Richard gets into Windy & Warm, a tune made famous by Doc Watson and Chet Atkins. He builds variations on chord shapes and bass lines that add new ideas and greater depth to the tune, including the addition of a second guitar part in harmony with the melody.

The old-time Travis-style thumbpicking standard, Farewell My Bluebell, is a beautiful piece in C. After teaching the melody, Richard provides many options for making this classic your own, adding licks and variations that will make the piece more dynamic and musically interesting.

Finally, Struttin' by Jerry Reed, in dropped D, makes for a challenging show-stopper, a complex ragtime-like tune with a variety of techniques, stride piano-style bass lines and jazzy chords. Jerry was one of Richard's main influences and he does his master justice with this dynamic tune.
