As far as mellophones go, this one beats the rest. It has great tone and intonation and is extremely easy to play. There isn't much resistance into the upper and lower registers. The tuning slide is located right next to the 1st valve slide. Instead of putting your thumb into the 1st valve slide, it goes on a ring on the tuning slide, allowing you to tune any note. This is a great feature for outdoor playing. The hot sun or freezing nights on the fields really affects not only your playing, but the instrument. I highly recommend this mellophone for any corp, school, or personal player.
This is the best Mellophone I have ever played. I've been playing French Horn for about six and a half years with a few years of mellophone on the side. This horn projects and has a wonderful tone, whether you're in extreme heat or cold it gets the job done. Plus the 'tune any note' feature is an awesome thing to have. I can't think of anything bad to say about this horn.
My band teacher asked me to switch over from color guard to the horn line this year and I play the flute... it wasn't a hard switch from flute to mellophone... this is a good one for beginners like myself who aren't used to playing brass.
