OVERVIEW

Versatile hybrid maple/birch shells with an upgraded Armory series snare.

The Armory Series Studioease by Mapex features a 6-ply birch and maple shell that outputs a warm, focused tone. SONIClear bearing edge, tom suspension and floor tom legs allow the heads to sit flat and increase shell resonance. Mapex Saturn IV-style lugs ensure a firm tune while providing a low-mass aesthetic.

This shell pack offers toms that are more shallow to provide a "quicker" and more clipped resonance for funk or fusion.

In addition, all Armory shell packs include the 14" x 5-1/2" Tomahawk Black-Plated Steel Snare. The Tomahawk produces a bright, focused and loud backbeat and adds style to all Armory shell packs.

This purchase includes a manufacturer trade-in offer for ANY of Mapex's Armory Series four other snare drums. You'll have two weeks after your Armory kit purchase to test out the Tomahawk and, if the Tomahawk snare doesn't fit your sound, you can trade it in directly with Mapex for one of the other four Armory Snare drums at no charge.

Sound - Sounds great even with stock heads. Soniclear system lives up to hype. Buy your heads and make it sound even better

Bass drum - The gentle giant. Can be the boom of a firework or the soft bass of a slow jazz ensemble

    LONG review
This was a purchase that ended up as a gift that kept on giving. I have played on many sets over the years, tama superstar, gretsch catalina, ludwig continental, and some others. All of these are amazing sets, but none of these compete with the Mapex out the box. Comparing each set with just the stock heads, the Mapex wins, hands down.

It was extremely easy to put together. Everything about the toms is true. The floor tom legs really improve the sound. The rack tom mounting system is on point with convince and versatility.

This new soniclear system is immediately noticeable. Tuning is always a challenge, less to some than others, but this system makes it so much easier to the novice drummers. I hope to see this style to start going on even less expensive drumsets to help drummers learn how to tune.

The tone of the drums are great. My tom heads were still in the mail when I received the set and I couldn't wait for them, so I popped on the stock heads just to start playing. The sound honestly surprised me. I honestly thought I had some high quality remo's on them that had just been beaten up a little bit. Once the heads I ordered came in (Evans G14) The true sound really came out. I love having a solid sustain with a very full bodied tone and this set delivered. The birch/maple/birch shells allow for any type of style to be played. Put on your favorite type of heads and you will love the sound you hear.

The bass drum is a power that should be messed with. This thing packs a punch that your house/studio/neighbors/people walking their dogs outside will feel. I had an old powerstroke 3 sitting around and put it on when I first got the set and wow. Not much else to say. No towels in the drum, no other extras put on at all and this drum is definitely my new favorite of the whole set. It can be used as that low end monster that your audience will feel in the chest or those subtle ghost notes while you are playing some sweet grooves. The response on this drum is just like a high quality snare when playing soft but still engaging the snares on the edge of the head. And speaking of snares

The snare was just that much more of a bonus. I have a Pearl free floater that i can not get enough off, but the Tomahawk that came with the set is not a joke. I was expecting to use the trade in system and get a different one, but after messing around on it for just a little, I don't think I am going to part with this steel beast. I went into a store and tried out the other options to see if any of the other snares were better. They were all amazing in their own way, but I am sticking to the steel. I highly suggest finding a store that has all the Armory series snares and finding your favorite. This trade in offer is too good to pass up. Of all the drums, I play the snare the most and I wasn't going to keep one I wouldn't play very often.

Overall as you can tell. I love this thing. This is going to be the set that I am probably going to stick with for a very long time. No matter what style you is, this set will be able to accommodate your needs. The price on this set is amazing for what you get. I can't believe how much I got for the money. If you are looking for a set that you are going to love, looks amazing, and sounds even better, this is the way to go.

The finish is much lighter in color and much different from photo. It reminds me of a conference room table top. Seams are huge and very visible on each drum which makes it ugly all the more. Sound of kit is probably comparable to any mid-line kit. Meaning one can get a decent tone out of this kit.

Comments about Mapex Armory Series 6-Piece Studioease Shell Pack Fast Toms:

The kit itself is great, even with the stock heads. Dat kick tho...whoa. My only issue isn't with the kit at all, It's with KHS America. If you don't know (I didn't until this interaction) KHS America is the corporation that owns Mapex, Sonor, Hercules, and a bunch of other brands. So here's what happened:

I'm not a fan of metal snares, so I knew that I wanted to exchange it. I selected the Exterminator based on reviews and videos comparing all the snares in the Armory line. So, as soon as I got the kit, I followed the instructions on the Mapex website, and shipped the Tomahawk back without even taking it out of the original packaging. Now, the site says to allow 2 weeks for delivery. As I sit here writing this review, it's been 7 weeks since they RECEIVED the my Tomahawk, and they still haven't even SHIPPED the Exterminator.

I had been in email contact with a KHS rep from around the 2 week mark, and every time we exchanged emails he would gave me some excuse, and promise to ship it by the end of that week. Every week, when the snare doesn't show up...again, I send them another email. Last week, my rep asked me what shirt size I wear, so I told him. This week, still no snare...but I did get a shirt... Of course...IT WAS THE WRONG SIZE. Basically, I would be embarrassed if I worked for KHS America. They seem to be as about incompetent as they come.

TL;DR: Yes, I would recommend this KIT. The shells, lugs, hardware, even the stock heads are great. I would absolutely NOT RECOMMEND trying to exchange the snare, unless you like staring at your brandy new kit without being able to properly play it. (or you could see if you have a local store that carries snares in the Armory line. Might get lucky) As always, my interaction with Musicians Friend was superb.

Final note, I got tired of staring at my kit, so I went to a local store and bought an Orange County 13x7 maple snare, which is fantastic, and compliments the Armory kit nicely.

I almost never review products I buy, I guess I'm lazy in that regard, but I have to say something about this kit... I have been playing Mapex kits since 1993 starting with an original Mars, then Saturn. My home studio kit is a Mars Pro, but I needed a another new stage kit (I play for too many bands...) :) Right out of the box, all I needed to do was put on more durable heads (Aquarian Performance II's) and this kit sounded great. Also, Mapex has the snare exchange and I'm not crazy about steel snares so they are exchanging through shipping a wood matching snare, and the set is the coolest color of all the kits I've ever played on before (Magna Red - a beautiful dark red sparkle that fades into a black sparkle). The drums are just the perfect sizes and the tom mounts are incredibly versatile and cut back the dead spots that you get from arm mounted toms. The price of these drums for the quality was a real bargain.

I HAVE NOT PLAYED ON AN ACOUSTIC KIT, SINCE THE 70'S. SO I DID ALOT OF RESEARCHING ON WHAT KIT I WOULD INVEST IN.AFTER COMPARING KITS WITH WATCHING AND LISTENING TO VIDEOS, I WAS SOLD.I'M AMAZED AT THE OVERALL QUALITY OF THIS KIT. THE FINISH IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. THEY TUNED UP PRETTY FAST. STILL NEED TO DO SOME FINE TUNING, BUT I'M TOTALLY IMPRESSED WITH EVERY ASPECT OF THIS KIT. FROM THE QUALITY OF THE SHELLS TO THE HARDWARE AND MOUNTING SYSTEM .DELIVERY WAS FAST AND EVERYTHING WAS PACKAGED ,WITH NO DAMAGE TO ANY PIECES. I'VE INCORPORATED THIS KIT WITH AQUARIAN ONHEADS, SO I HAVE THE ULTIMATE HYBRID SETUP .MAPEX HAS MADE A PRODUCT, THAT I DO NOT SEE HOW ANY OTHER MANUFACTURER, CAN COMPETE WITH,IN THIS PRICE RANGE. MAPEX WILL BE MY CHOICE OF DRUMS FOREVER !

Comments about Mapex Armory Series 6-Piece Studioease Shell Pack Fast Toms:

I am in a progressive heavy metal band. I bought the Armory series because I need a new set and this one hit all of my marks during research. Plus, it was significantly less expensive than Pearl, which was my first choice. I also like the stand-mounting toms. They allow for a tighter setup which increases my play speed. An added benefit is the shallower rims. I have hit my knuckles way less on these. The Tomahawk snare is amazing as well. A bit tinny for my taste, but nothing a dead-ringer can't fix.

This kit is pretty awesome! Beefy sounding kick and the toms sound great! The 14" floor tom looks small, but produces a ton of sound. I was surprised. Before I got the kit, I had in my mind I'd swap the stock snare for the Daisy Cutter, but I fell in love with the Tomahawk immediately! Definitely a great product and I would recommend this kit to anyone.
