OVERVIEW

Pamper your guitar with great strings from Martin.

Gauges 11.5-14-23-28-38-47.

If it's one thing Martin knows, it's finely crafted and vintage instruments. Martin created their Marquis line to pamper your guitar by adding a soft thread wrap at the ball ends which prevent wear and tear on the bridge and end plate as you play. This thread wrap puts a comforting layer of protection in place every time you change your strings.

I've only recently picked up the guitar to try and learn it after having played other fretted stringed instruments for a while. My guitar is an older, 3rd-hand, no-name folk model, kind of beat up but still very playable and with what people will colorfully refer to as "character."

When I got it it was strung with these high-tension steel strings, and playing it was really hard. A guitar playing friend recommended I go with newer strings both for myself and to spare the guitar. He recommended Martins. I was skeptical, because I've played Martins on my uke and they were really poor. Still, I gave these a try and was really surprised at not only the comfort, but also the tone, depth, and volume. The best part is that since they are comparably low tension I'm not putting the extra strain on the guitar.

Take this for whatevery you think it's worth, but as a guitar n00b, I'd say you definitely could do worse.

Though these strings offer increased playability, what you gain in playabilit you loose in tone. I put these on two guitars. The result was, I lost the tonal quality and developed ratting on the frets that was not present previously. They give about the same feel and sound, you would get by putting steel electric strings on your acoustic. For a beginer they would be great. The playability allows for a very lite touch and string bending on an acoustic. These may be appealing to some guitarist, but the are not for me. I prefer the tone of brass on my guitars.

Typical Martin quality which is great. Didn't sound new and tinny like most strings straight outta the pack. I'm on a mission to try as many Martin strings as possible before I expire. Always good bang for the buck.

Comments about Martin M1400 Marquis Silk and Steel Custom Acoustic Guitar Strings:

I was a bit bummed when Martin discontinued their finger style strings and came out with those crappy FX strings. These Marquis folk strings are fantastic for instrumentals. They don't wear your hands out like other strings. As long as they don't discontinue these I'll be a happy picker. The best feature about these strings is the balance of tone you get and the volume isn't that bad either. Then again, if volume is what your looking for then I suggest you plug your guitar in and turn it up. Now if they last longer then a couple weeks then I'd say they are the holy grail of finger style strings.

Comments about Martin M1400 Marquis Silk and Steel Custom Acoustic Guitar Strings:

These are great strings, hands down. Their tone is deeper or more mellow on the bass side. There's not the sharpness or brassiness you find with 80/20's or some Phosphor Bronze strings. I think some people confuse this with there being less volume. I strung my Zager ZAD-50 Dreadnaught with them and was very happy with the volume output compared to what some have suggested. These are easier on the fingers with their lower tension and should make string benders happy with their flexibility. These don't give you the traditional "twang" of traditional strings. These are great for those who want a more delicate nuances in their tone or a different colour than their buddies acoustic.

Comments about Martin M1400 Marquis Silk and Steel Custom Acoustic Guitar Strings:

Silk and Steel strings became available in the 1960s, during the FOLK MUSIC scare of that era. Folkie Wannbees had trouble developing callouses and their poor little fingers hurt when they were trying to learn "Guantanamera" or "CumBYah" or "This Land Is Your Land", etc. As it turns out, the in-rush of lightly braced tops of Folk Guitars were also helped by these strings with less pressure on the bridge structure, so it didn't warp the soundboard, and the guitars didn't develop a "belly" after sitting unused for decades in a case under a bed or in a back bedroom closet. I had several 60s era 12-strings guitars come my way, 3 with terrible belly problems. I re-humidified them, which took as long as 6 months, but very one of them came back. I put Martin Silk and Steel strings on them and I have had no repeat problems = all are very playable, without resorting to Vise-Grips! Most importantly, they sound delicious!

I recently got a Loar LO-216. The guitar needed a setup, which I can do myself and part of that was to change strings. Although 12-50 strings are recommended, I used these which are lighter gauge.
After breaking them in, they have mellowed and made the action a bit lower and easier to play. I can't comment on longevity, since they've only been on for a week, but these are great strings for this guitar.

I have never heard strings allow such distinctive resonation. When I am doing some rather intermediate to fast paced finger picking, The individual string tones resonate very clearly. I think the steel silk combo doesn't over vibrate to where it all the tones blend over each other. I am impressed.

These strings don't produce the kind of volume many players are looking for, but for me, mostly just a living-room sofa picker, they're just fine. Very mellow, and far and away the most comfortable strings I've played. I really don't want anything else for fingerstyle. It's great that they're cheaper than other brands, but on the other hand, they don't last as long as some.

A rather well known tech who was working on my acoustic (10 years ago) warned me if I didn't change the strng tension on my guitar, I'd have some derious problem in the future. Since it is my #1 acoustic and I love how it is set up, that would not do. He told me to try these because the tension was lower than that of a standard steel string set and man...all problems stopped there! The tone is exactly what I'm after and they feel great! I only wish they lasted a little longer but who doesn't. Give them a try. You'll love them. Of note: I now live in Sweden and found they are unheard of in Europe. You can order them but they cost about $15+ a set and must be ordered from Denmark.

I prefer the sound of medium strings but due to arthritis was having a hard time playing them. Light strings sounded to thin for me and were still hard on my fingers. The guitar person at my local store recommended these strings instead and they work very well for me. The have kind of a bluesy sound to them. Not thin sounding like other light strings but not as loud either. Because they are so flexible and light, they are the easiest of any strings I have found on my fingers and I can play for much longer without pain. They sound very even across the board. I lead worship at church and they play and sound great for that. For what they are and what they do, they are excellent strings. If you expect them to sound just like other steel strings, you will be a little disappointed. If you have a condition like arthritis and regular strings hurt your fingers, these are hands down the best option I have found. These would also be great for beginners, especially children, as they are softer on the finger tips than anything else I have played. My only concern is that the G string broke while installing it and I have never had that happen before. The G, B and E just do not seem as tough as regular steel strings. Time will tell if this is an accurate assessment. Otherwise, I love these strings.

I was looking for strings that didn't feel like cables under my fingers. I'm primarily an electric player used to playing on 10s and these strings are just perfect. The strings feel great and don't fill my hand.

I like these strings so well that I just purchased 5 more sets for a few other guitars I have.
