Comments about Martin Retro Series 00-15E Grand Concert Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

My extended family largely plays acoustic country from 1950 to present, bluegrass from all eras, and contemporary christian worship. Most of the music is played at small community gatherings (>100 people) and for very small events (>20 people). This guitar is perfect for all event in this size, the internal electronics allow for easy amplification without a large concern for feedback due to the feedback destroyer option. When unplugged, this guitar sounds like a guitar almost twice its size. I know this because I also have a Martin DC-16GTE, and the 00-15E sounds great right next to it. Martin has done a great job with the small body guitar by their choice of wood. The dark mahogany (which has a excellent finish, smooth but not shiny so fingerprints, dirt, etc do not show) allows this guitar to have a remarkably good range of tone with the high notes being bright but without being thin or "twangy". The bass range on the guitar is similar in that the low tones ring out without sound sounding forced. For fingerpicking, this guitar has the natural acoustic volume to be heard without having to significantly ask the rest of the band (violin, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar) to reduce their playing volume. The neck is rounded on the edges, but is not sharp and the rest of the neck has limited curvature so for people with small hands (like myself) you don't have to stretch your hand, thus making the action quick.

Comments about Martin Retro Series 00-15E Grand Concert Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I ordered the Taylor 522ce first, but it was an open box and it seemed someone had tried to "improve" the setup. I could play it enough to see hear and feel that it was a quality box with great tone.

But I sent it back and got the 00-15ce. Wow. This guitar sounds amazing. I have a Brazilian HD28, an Indian GPCPA4, a Taylor 314, and have played a hundred other Martins/Gibsons/Taylors/Customs, and this guitar stands up. For its size, it has incredibly rich tone and volume (which I was a little worried about), and is very comparable to the GPCPA4 in volume. It has that deep rich Martin growl when strumming, and thick rich notes when finger picking.

But the electronics were the biggest surprise, I couldn't figure out why this guitar was 50% more than the 00-15M. Now I know - the electronic voicings are amazing and you can make the guitar sound just like it does unplugged. Read about how they did it using 9 $100k mics while recording vintage instruments on Martin's website.

My fingers are shredded, can't put this thing down!
