if you play metal or anything close DO NOT buy this amp. it cannot handle the low-ends of a guitar even in standard tuning, especially when it comes to palm muting. maybe if you have a different cab that cud actually handle what the head puts out it MIGHT sound decent. i have a boss equilizer and i cant even use it cuz the boost it gives makes the amp sound even worse. if youre still considering buying one, go play just open e palm mutes(even on a low volume) if youre gonna spend this much id save up a little bit longer and get something else

Amazing tone : price ratio

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

This amp is absolutely amazing for what it is and how much is costs. That distinct warm tube tone that everyone is after is in this amp. And, the best part, it has an awesome metal crunch. This amp is perfect for hard rock or metal, or even jazz. You have a small army of tonal options. I got mine used at a Guitar Center, and it's a little older. Mine has a silver grill and the Peavey logo doesnt have the wings. And I think the newer models are better than mine, but I'm not reviewing mine. For the price, you really can't get tube tone (Believe me, I've tried). I've never actually used the Valve King cab though, but thats only a minute difference. All in all, this amp is superb. Go buy one. Right now. Go go go go.

amazing.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

i needed a nice amp than the fender fm212r i was using for playing shows, so after realizing i couldnt afford a 6505, i decided to buy the valveking head with the matching VK cab. this head blew away the 6505 in my opinion, and you cant go wrong with the valveking cab that is perfectly voiced to the head. the texture control is phenomenal as well, because i can go from an absolutely brutal distortion on class A/B to a straight blues tone through class A power, and the clean is absolutely shimmering. excellent deal, i recommend it to anyone regardless of genre.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

This is a great amp it has good bright cleans and has enough gain for any kind of metal. The people who claim "NOT GOOD FOR METAL" just don't know how to set the amp up. They think you just hit a button like on a line 6 spider and BAM you will get a metal tone. WRONG! You need to tweak your sound and to be quite honest you don't really need an OD pedal once you start crankin the volume it really takes on a heavy sound. It's loud as hell too! I threw some Sovtek 6l6wxt tubes in it and it sounds great just ordered my eminence speakers too!! If you want some tips on how to set it up just go on YT and search "How To Get A Brutal Tone Out of Your Peavey Valveking" That should help! Also run a patch cable through the effects loop it cleans up your sound a bit. Good for metal! Trust meh! You can get a brutal sound if you know what you are doing.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I didn't know what to expect buying this. I needed an amp and didn't have a bunch of money to spend. This amp to me is not the best amp I could buy, but it definitely was worth the money. Tube relay is excellent and the cleans are beautiful. The lead channel is not the best I've heard, but if you mess with it enough you can get a tone you can be satisfied with.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

i've been playing with this amp for the past few years and i've received a lot of compliments on the sound it get. at the time of purchase, money was pretty tight but i needed a reliable amp that i didnt need to use a bunch of pedals with just to make it sound good. i play mainly rock and metal and this amp absolutely helps me achieve what i want. its got a certain warm crunch that i feel like most other amps just dont have in this price range. i debated getting a Randall instead of this one but i knew it wouldnt sound this good. i will admit though, i was never too impressed with the clean channel of this amp but i did like how there was a button to add more brightness to the clean sound.

overall, this amp is really great and i imagine the combo amp version of this is great too. i would not recommend this amp if you're just going to be jamming in your bedroom like i do. i dont think i've EVER raised the volume higher than 1 when playing by myself. if you're interested in this great tone, but dont plan on gigging with it, i'd definitely go for the smaller combo amp version.

if you're interested in hearing me use this amp, search "littleredguitars2" on youtube and you'll see hundreds of videos i've made with this amp over the past few years.

Best Amp for the Low Budget Musician

By GuitarNutz

from Sebastian, FL

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I bought this amp for two reasons I owned the VK212 and the price was right. I have been looking for a all tube amp at a reasonable price and I was not dissapointed in the least when I purchased the VK100 half stack. I had a few problems with defective tubes but Peavey repaired the problems with no hassel. The distortion on this amp is so good I no longer use any distortion pedals any more. The Clean is really rich and full playing with a Les Paul. I would reccomend this to any beginer to Professional musician. Peavey should really include the foot switch instead of having to buy it seperately

great amp!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I love the volume. Be sure you have the room and need for an amp this loud! It is a monster. But you have to get it up about 2.5 or more to sound good and believe me thats $%^& LOUD with this guy! If your looking for a practice amp. Buy one. This is NOT. Set to 4.5 No other band member can be heard.. Maybe the drums. I run it at about 3.5 for practice with my wifes peavey 300w bass amp and r. guitarists amp (solid state randall) prob at about 8vol. and It sounds amazing. Clean chanel is great too but never use it with my band. I run a boss noise sup. and an ibanez tubsceemer overdrive petals. but only on cold days!?!? It seems the warmer the amp. AND room is the better it sounds and when really warm I dont use the petals at all. I am new to tube amps and I guess this is normal. I have had many full stacks and none have anywhere near the great sound this half stack has. One tip. Let it warm up on stand by for 20 minutes before playing for a better sound
The knob in the back for changing from a-b is great!
Had this stack for about three months and I love it.. No probs yet

Great amp!!!

By TangyPop

from Boston

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

Cleans are great and the distortion is good too. I use the cleans with a metal pedal and it sounds AMAZING!!! Forget what people say about the palm mutes being weak, this thing punches each note with a good pedal/guitar. Like having a tube switcher knob in the back, makes for alot of creativity. My only complaint is that the reverb is a master, so it's either on or it's off no matter the channel. This is well worth paying a few extra bucks for to get away from the tacky Marshall MG name and steering clear of hollow Line 6 sounds.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

Peavey amps last forever. My father has had his peavey bass amp for 25 years and it sounds fresh out of the box. The 5150 series, my friend has the first release year, and all it needed was retubed, this amp is exactly the same. The cab sounds good, nice that its 16 ohms. All in all this setup can be used for practice or playing a staduim, the only one downfall about this, is the footswitch is not included.

excellent buy

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

The best thing about this amp, by far, is its versatility. When I walked in Guitar Center in search for a new half-stack, I told the clerk that I needed something that could play anything from Jimi Hendrix to Pantera. He immediately showed me this thing, and it delivered quite well. I gave the features a five because, to me, it has everything you could want, feature-wise, in an amplifier. The texture knob really gives you a wide range from a classic to modern sound. The most important feature for shaping your tone with this thing is the presence and resonance knobs, which really come in handy. The reverb is not too good but I'm more of a stomp-box guy when it comes to effects. I gave the quality a four because it lacks the overall tone value of an orange or some marshalls. I gave the value a five because you absolutely can't beat the price on this thing. You get much more than what you pay for. Overall, I would recommend this amp to anyone who plays in a band with contrasting sounds, or anyone who wants a superb tube amp at a fantastic price.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

Honestly this is just a mediocar practice amp to me. Mind you, I don't think there is a such thing as a perfect amp that doesn't need an up grade or a modification. It's too muddy, not great for metal, nor is it great for blues. For the money yes, it's great for power but that is about it in my opinion. If you're a metal player, you'd be better off with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (don't really do it)...which I should have bought over this 6 years ago. But being a kid; I had to have the half stack-worst mistake ever made. Unless you have roadies DO NOT GET A HALF STACK!!!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

My guitarest bought this today after he blew his old Kustom. This thing is sooo loud. We had it on 3 when we had to have the old one on 6. The only problem is the fact it don't come with a footswitch but we found a Marshell footswitch works.

Best low budget tube amp out there

By TubeDude

from Dallas TX

See all my reviews

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I bought my Peavey ValveKing Half-Stack because I wanted a tube halfstack (already own 2 solid state amps) that I could afford. This thing sounds nice right out of the box! I did swap out the tubes with JJ 6l6's and Tung Sol 12AX7's to get rid of the slight muddiness. One thing you should do is jump the effects loop, it gives you a little more gain and seems to smooth the sound out a little. My amp came with Ruby 6l6s and JJ 12AX7s from the factory. All in all I love this thing!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I finally gave in and got the Peavy Valve King Half-Stack and have had it for about 6 months now. At first I was skeptical, because the price was so cheap. I thought I would be getting a mediocre amp, and thought I would probably have to upgrade the tubes to get a decent sound out of the thing. I was completly wrong. It took about a few solid weeks of playing it until the tubes finally wore in. My lead guitarist uses an Orange Rocker-30 head and he was still blown away by the tonal range I could get out of it. He uses a full stack Orange at our shows, and I just use my Peavy vk Half-Stack, and this thing lives up to it's potential and more. The best thing about this is that it's louder than what our Berringer PA's can juice up to. Our lead has his volume cranked up to about 6 and I have mine cranked to barely past 1.The features are pretty good for the price. The texture is what get's me about the head, as well as the presence and resonance controls. I play hard rock to metal, so the distortion keeps me wanting more. I sold all my pedals, because after hearing the Valve King, I knew I found my tone. The Valve King is great for all styles of music ranging from: country, blues, rock, and metal. With a few minor adjustments to the settings I know you will find the true tone you've been needing. If your feeling indecisive about getting the Valve King, don't be. It will blow you away at a great price range also.

Nice amp for the cash

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I just tried this at a local music store. I was very impressed. The clean was very glassy sounding like SRV. And the crunch went from classic rock to full on metal. I have been playing for 30+yrs and I have been using a solid state stack with rack gear recently because of it's reliability. But I also like tube warmth. But I could never find a tube amp that can do everything I can play without a bunch of pedals. "Until now" My band plays everything from Blues,Classic Rock,Pop rock,Country to Satriani and everything in between. So I needed a really, really flexable amp. And this seems to be the one. I haven't decided to get the head or 2x12 combo yet? They both sounded great. I don't like the plastic input jacks though. Thus the great price?

This amp is a dream come true

By 80sRocker

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

The Valve King 100 amp is a dream come true- so much power, such clear brite clean tones, such heavy dirty crunch tones all from one amp. Extremely powerful- but you can bring it down a notch with the texture control which blends the power from 4 to 2 power tubes. Has a 4,8,16 ohm switch on the back for flexibility in which cabinet you use. Footswitch is clean and fast also.
