Comments about Peter Ponzol Silver Line Premium Saxophone Mouthpiece Kit:
I purchased this mouthpiece out of curiosity to try as a Meyer stand in after it was marked down by a considerable amount. I've only played Meyer for Tenor & was pleased with it. I read that Meyer worked best on Alto. I purchased the 5M Silver Line for Alto having never played a Meyer on Alto. I've been playing for about 30 yrs but didn't get into mouthpiece dynamics and effects until the last 2 or 3.
Until now, my favorite mouthpiece was by ESM (Ernst Schreiber) in both Classic (low baffle) #6 .071 tip & Jazz (high baffle) #6 .075 tip. The Jazz version is loud & bright, still a favorite but after I played the Silver Line 5M my Classic #6 was no longer my first choice. I found the 5M as free blowing and responsive as the ESM Classic. The chamber is a little larger and square with rounded corners, contoured in a manner that blends smoothly into the neck entrance. The beak of the mouthpiece is a little wider than the ESM and the window area a little wider inward than the ESM. I believe all of those differences combined to have a positive effect on my virbrato frequency all of which made me want to play using it more. It is unfortunate that we have been so well conditioned to associate quality with a minimum price, and rate instruments, student, intermediate & professional where the laws of physics suggest otherwise when the instruments are made properly regardless of coating and material. My ESM Classic cost me 10 times as much as the 5M Silver Line. I didn't think I was going to run into a mpc that played well enough to make me dump the ESM. Surprise!
I try not to murk up descriptions with a lot of subjective adjectives, in favor of quantitative terms. We all know what low resistance, loud, bright and dark means for the most part. The 5M sits in the middle, not so loud (I practice at full volume) that it makes my ears ring like my ESM Jazz #6, medium bright with edge capability, and probably as low on resistance as is possible with any Alto mouthpiece.
