The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that it took me a while to get comfortable assembling the stand, quickly. As for sturdiness, it is absolutely the best that I've found, with the exception of the Manhasset. It is heavier than the little chrome things, but they're so flimsy that it's almost pointless to use. This is a solid stand without those annoying little clamps on the shelf that tears up music, not helping at all. It's also nice enough that it can be used in public performances without embarassment. It is sturdy and has lasted me for 3 years, so far with no difficulty at all. As a matter of fact, I'm about to order another one because one of my advanced students is so in love with it (after I loaned to to her) that she wants to buy it from me! Really fantastic product. I'd give it 5 stars if they could make it just a little quicker to assemble at first glance (although it really is a snap once you've done it a few times).

I bought this stand about three years ago because it was on sale (in the neighborhood of under $30) and for its presentable looks and portability. Once you get used to it, it doesn't take too long to assemble. The metal legs also ensure a sturdy base. There are also hidden, wire extensions that increase the size of the desk, in case the score opens up and the pages go beyond the shelf. My main complaint is all the plastic, particularly the shelf; it seems as though it cannot take too much weight and placing a heavier folder or thick binder filled with music on it feels risky. I hope that they improve on this in the future, because it's a nice idea for a stand.

Poor Execution of neat idea

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

It's a great idea, but the quality is poor. The locking mechanism for the desk hinge jams up, so you either can't tighten it, or the desk can't be folded or unfolded. But the biggest problem is with the legs. The tops of the legs have a wedge that fits into slots on the center tube. There's no positive locking of the legs into the stand, so the legs fall out very easily when you move the stand, or just lightly bump it. As a result of falls, I've had the wedge on one leg break off. Petersen sent a replacement leg, but the problem remains. A music stand that so readily falls apart is not acceptable in a performance environment.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I have owned my Petersen Stand for about 7 years. Not unexpectedly, two fiber spacers have disinegrated, emailed Petersen Designs to find if they were available and, if so, the cost to replace spacers. They sent them by return mail, at no cost.

Good stand, a little overpriced

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

This is a decent stand for what it is, but I think it is too cheaply made for the price. I've gone through three of these stands in the last six years - the head of the stand folds in half (for easy storage), but the knobs to tighten and loosen it get off track easily, so there went stand number one. On stand number two, the bit that is used to tighten the stand to keep it in place when adjusting the height literally just snapped in half. I'm on stand number three right now - it was built with the tolerances too tight, so putting it together and getting it apart is a real pain. That being said, I haven't found any other portable stands on the market that are better. If you have room, just buy a real non-folding stand. Otherwise, this is way better than the wire stand you're used to from middle school, and until something else comes out, it's not bad.

Disappointing

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I bought this stand for a musical theatre pit gig and was frustrated at how the parts kept getting stuck together. It's now broken b/c I had to ask so many people to help me with untwisting. Turns out WD-40 would have been handy so if you buy this stand, keep a can of WD40 handy. The instructions for assembly are in picture form only (no words) and I found them confusing. And the ability to hold extra pages is in a wire form and not sturdy enough for my pages.

Petersen folds in my veiw

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

Hate to be negative, but I have 2 of these stands. The price is right, but one continuosly tips over when a leg gives out of the track - with no more weight than RealBook 1. The other stand suffers from a split tension ring. I can only use it when I am sitting and willing to strain to see the music on the un-extended lowest level. That one also will tip over when a leg moves out of the track, though less often.

Breaks easily. Don't buy.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

I bought two of these and didn't mind the plasticky feel at first. Pretty soon bits of both began to break, despite only light, infrequent use. The round grip that sets the height split on both and we used gaffa tape for a while but then the legs' mounting section began to fall out of the central tube. Sometimes a leg would fall off if you lifted it to move it. We've now consigned them both to the bin and I'm looking for two new portable but sturdy stands.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

This stand was a piece of junk, it's made of cheap plastic, is bulky / not very portable in its folded form anyway, and mine got stuck in a half-open position and would not budge. I returned it to WWBW less than a month after buying it and now I have a "port-a-stand" http://www.portastand.com/ my wife gave me as a gift that I am 100% pleased with. I love WWBW, but don't buy this product, it's worthless.

Petersen Folding Music Stand

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

A great improvement in looks and portability over the older heavier solid metal stands. There are two difficulties I have found. One, the legs can fall off if the stand is moved, tipped over or otherwise disturbed. Two, the plastic slide on lip that hold the music is too flimsy. A light weight metal would be a vast improvement. Otherwise, a great stand.

Worst music stand ever!

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

This stand was a piece of plastic junk! The legs kept falling out, I cut my hand trying to loosen the height adjustment. It constantly stayed stuck closed. Would not fit in the case easily. I have to say, Customer Service at WWBW was extremly helpful in giving me a full credit for the item. I would not recommend it-go for the Peak folding music stand that they also offer.

Comments about Petersen Folding Music Stand:

Received by Petersen Folding Music Stand October 16, 2009. Once assembled one of the legs kept letting go and the stand would fall over. It takes some time trying to get the legs to stay fime and not let go. Could be a big problem at a gig. Plan only to use at home for practice. Every time you move the stand location one of the legs fall off. Big Problem!!!
