OVERVIEW

High-resolution, portable audio interface for Mac, PC and iPad.

The UR44 is unique in its combination of input and output capabilities, stellar component quality and portability. Four Neutrik analog combo inputs with peak LEDs and switchable +48 V phantom power provide inputs for everything from an electric guitar through line-level audio equipment to boutique condenser microphones. Switchable Hi-Z support means no additional DI box is required to hook up your electric guitar or bass. Two additional line inputs allow connection of an extra audio source in combination with four mic preamps giving you a total of six input channels; that's enough to handle a huge range of recording situations.

This unique interface also brings you the advantages of latency-free monitoring powered by the dspMixFx application and offering DSP-powered FX, letting you record with compression, EQ, reverb and guitar amp simulation on the headphone mix. And if you're using Cubase, all this functionality is integrated directly into the Cubase mixer and custom Cubase windows. For composers and producers using MIDI equipment like keyboards or pad controllers, the UR44 provides MIDI I/O ports on the back panel.

Upwardly mobile
The UR44 is a unique production system as it puts first-class audio technology and outstanding sound quality in a rugged portable device that gives you enough I/O capability for complete flexibility: Recording live performances, producing in studio quality at home or in a hotel room, pre-production for your next album in your rehearsal space, playing back audio backing tracks on stageĀ¦ The UR44 means no compromises - you can keep your options open at all times. Enjoy the audio quality and advanced features of first-class, studio-ready components housed within an interface portable enough to accompany you wherever you and your music happen to be.

Project studios
While smaller project studios might not need a huge analog desk or dozens of inputs, they do require outstanding audio quality and the ability to record a wide range of musicians, vocalists and other audio sources. Phantom power for highest quality condenser mics is just as important as a feature as the ability to connect several pairs of monitors for A/B-ing mixes on different speaker combinations. Need to quickly record guitar to add to your score or song? Just plug in a guitar to a Hi-Z input and record your guitar with DSP FX and no latency. Record all your digital instruments and connect MIDI controller keyboards to completely integrate all your gear in one compact, portable interface.

The all-round solution for multi-role musicians
Musicians today often find themselves in several different roles: today you might be recording your band in a rehearsal room, tomorrow helping out on a friend's album production or DJing at a live venue or club; the week after you might need an interface to playback audio backing tracks for a live gig or spend a Sunday afternoon finally getting around to setting up that home studio. Or you might need a portable interface for your hotel room to record that idea that's been bouncing around in your head all day while on tour. The perfect balance between I/O capability, portability, outstanding audio quality and seamless handling throughout makes the UR44 the ideal interface for the modern multi-role musician.

Backing the band
These days many bands and groups augment their live music with pre-produced backing tracks, perhaps even using MIDI to trigger additional equipment like stage lighting. The UR44 offers an ultra-flexible and reliable portable solution for bands and live musicians. Independent headphone outputs with individual volume control mean playback mixes are readily available for one band member in charge of cueing the next song, while four individual line outputs mean up to two separate stereo mixes for the FOH mixer and musicians on stage. The MIDI I/O can feed lighting equipment with MIDI events synced to the song playing back. And with ultra-stable drivers, a rugged metal case and a sturdy AC adapter that guarantees a stable electrical supply, the UR44 is ideally suited to live bands and performers.

Mobile recording solution
With its stable driver technology, quality components and four first-class mic preamps, the UR44 offers all the functionality needed to record live performances at smaller, more intimate venues or compact rehearsal rooms, or even to record larger groups or vocal ensembles with a few well-placed, high-quality mics. The combination of a portable interface that can fit in a shoulder bag with first-class hardware and software components like the acclaimed D-PRE mic preamps and the ultra-stable drivers makes the UR44 perfectly suited for many mobile recording situations.

Pro-level recordings with the iPad
Providing connectivity with Apple's iPad (V2 or later), the UR44 serves as a portable interface for iPad apps like Cubasis, Steinberg's streamlined, multi-touch sequencer tailored for the iPad. Perfect for on-the-fly productions and for sketching out musical ideas, Cubasis projects can then be transferred to a computer running Cubase for the next stage of production - while retaining the same audio interface.

I upgraded to this unit from the UR22. The 22 only needed to be plugged in and the software installed and Cubase instantly recognized it and set up the inputs and outputs. The 44's default setup placed the FX bus at the output, leaving everything sounding like it was in a huge cave with too much reverb. After reading the online manual I discovered that both input and output busses needed to be set up. Once I did that correctly it was good to go.

There is one more feature that the UR22 has that the 44 doesn't have, and that is the knob to mix the input signal with the tracks. I am sure there is a complex configuration that can be set up to mix it, but the mix knob was a really convenient resource. The best way to monitor the incoming signal now is through the track monitor switch. It must be turned on during record and off during playback to hear what you recorded. Not a big issue, just a minor inconvenience. If I had not used the 22 prior to this, it probably wouldn't have even been an issue at all.

The sound quality is every bit as good as the UR22, and being able to record 192k 24 bit for the price of the unit is a huge plus. The additional inputs and outputs help in establishing a one-time setup rather than having to reconnect instruments every time we need to change to a different instrument. It not only saves time, but it saves wear and tear on the unit.

This is a fantastic interface at a great price. The fact that it can work with PCs, MACs, and iOS devices is a plus as well. It is also built like a tank! You cannot go wrong with the interface IMHO.

Comments about Steinberg UR44 USB Interface:

Activating this thing was the most painful and ridiculous task ever. It took me 3-4 downloads of updates and software to fix the software key not being recognized. Why should I have to reactivate a product I just bought?! To those who don't have the time to waste I would just go with the focusrite. If you do have the time to waste then get this. Monitors sound good and have no real latency or distortion as a result of using it. I have not had the chance to test my mic on it it yet. Seemed to work fine in ableton and Logic for some reason didn't recognize my mic. This could be as simple as changing settings in preferences but now days we want to be able to ready to record out the box. IJS. May take a little learning curve but not much different from the focus rite.

Comments about Steinberg UR44 USB Interface:

Nice piece of equipment. I have had many. I sill use an old BBE and Alexis Fx unit I have had for 30 years. This unit fits in perfect and is lot, lot, better than the older audio interfaces. It has always been a problem to get something simple and good at a reasonable price. This fits the bill. I still use an old Tascam Porta studio with a mixing board, 4 XLR's and 4 stereo strips. and it has a 4 track recorder. Very sweet and quiet. And with an old Mackie 1202 VLZ I have all the flexibility I need.. The Steinburg a good piece, and I am using Elements 8 with it, also a DAW that is far superior to the older digital stuff. I have a good set up again.

Comments about Steinberg UR44 USB Interface:

I got this to upgrade from a maudio FireWire 410. I compared them side by side recording the same source and the ur44 had more dynamic range by about 8db and over all a clear and natural sound. Additionally gunning a sx202 pre into the line in the ur44 performed better. Latency is ok. I expected more for a interface that is so much newer but ultimately in my sonar x2 daw I saw very little improvement in buffer size before dropout. Oddly, rever pluging seem to crush this thing and cause CPU overload in sonar. I think this must be a driver issue but the built in effects for zero latency limiting are worth the price of admission. The included daw SW is garbage. Limits you to just the front ur44 inputs so you can't use an external preamp without upgrading. Many other required features are disabled so I would not consigliere this in a price comparison with other interfaces. You still need daw SW.

Comments about Steinberg UR44 USB Interface:

The quality of the signal path is right up there with interfaces costing thousands. If you use Cubase there will be a new row in the Mixer called Hardware and this is where the UR inputs show up. You have full control of Compression, EQ, FX, and the option to add Reverb (great for vocalists) and either record the signal wet (records the Reverb) or record dry (only monitor the reverb). Having the UR's full DSP control built into the Cubase mixer is awesome and keeps the workflow fast and is so much better than flipping back and forth to a completely separate mixer app like most other audio interfaces require. That being said, when you install the drivers it also install a UR DSP Mix application so you still get the same control and flexibility with other DAWs besides Cubase. Truly an amazing interface!

Comments about Steinberg UR44 USB Interface:

All the good features of the UR824 ( which I already own), but perfect for those remote overdubs. I recently went out of town via Amtrak to record an acoustic piano on a project with just my UR44, laptop and 2 414s. Oh yeah, my Cubase key. The pre amps performed well, I was happy with the compression and eq, the client was happy with reverb in her headphones. Who could ask for more? Especially at the price,a true bargain.

Comments about Steinberg UR44 USB Interface:

This unit was purchased as a backup for my main recording interface unit. It installed and checked out without problems. However, the accompanying software is a different story, it was a nightmare getting the software activated. I use Sonar (Platinum) for my DAW but I had to download and install the included Cubase AI8 for the software to be activated so I could use it in Sonar. Thus the reason for only rating it 4 stars.
