Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

Solid build. Good fit and finish. I have quite a few ribbon mics, but this one is the smoothest.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

Compared to much more expensive active ribbon mic's this is a no brainier. Compare the frequency response to much pricier ribbons and you will find this is a great deal for this mic. It is sleek and warm and has good gain.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

I've been using a pair of these for about a month now and I've been blown away. I get a great warm tone but also low noise when compared to my previous modded mxl ribbon mic's.

The included shock mount is great along with the carrying/storage case for the mic.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

Ribbon mics are my favorite for recording guitar amps, as they require little EQ. They have a natural frequency response curve that mimics a guitar amp's, all the bass and midrange you need plus a roll-off of high frequencies you don't need. If you have been using dynamic and condensers, you will be pleasantly surprised by how natural they sound.
The ST170 is very solidly built, the fit and finish is superb, and the sound is what you hear in the room without peaks or artifacts. Regardless of the price, but especially for the price point, this is an outstanding microphone.

Unlike most mics that look good on paper but need EQ for a semblance of realism, this mic has the creamy filling electric guitarists want.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

I place it perpendicular to the strings, just above the bridge and a few inches back. It gets the tone I want from a cello, kinda meaty and gritty, but it doesn't pick up the bow noise and scratchiness too much the way that condensers usually do. Definitely happy I grabbed one.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

I don't have a Royer Ribbon Mic but from what I have read speck wise this mic has a better frequency response then there active ribbons. For the money you can't beat it! If you like warm recordings this mic is for you.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

Info for the novice: This mic captures sound from "front and back" NOT just front! So, If you want to use it to capture an amp or instrument, just keep in mind it will also pick up the room sound. If it is to be used for vocals, the same of course and you will also need a POP filter, that is a MUST, cause the ribbons are very sensitive to air motion. It will work great with 2 vocalists, one on each side. Yes, that = 2 pop filters. You will need the typical 48 volts to operate the mic. It does not use a battery. The sound is very un-colored- full frequency so there should be no problem with capturing vocals and "soft" (not a kick drum) acoustic instruments. For the pro: No, this is not a Neuman! In my opinion, only a Neuman is a Neuman.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

I'm very pleased with the build quality and accessories with this mic. Thus far I've only tried in-studio on acoustic guitar. It was very warm, quiet and accurate. I ended up liking it about 16" out.
Nice to have a ribbon option in-house.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST170 Active Ribbon Microphone:

I purchased this mic after watching a YouTube demo video by Pete Thorn. This mic REALLY captures the sound of your "amp in the room". I've been using a mixture of the typical 57"s, 609's, and 421's excetera.. and not always getting what I would hear in the live room. This microphone does a great job of getting just what I'm hearing coming off of the cabinet. It is built well and comes with it's own case and shock mount and it actually uses phantom power (unlike most all ribbon microphones) so it has plenty of output to feed your mic preamps. I highly recommend this mic for anyone trying to "capture that tone".
