OVERVIEW

The rare combo of Lutz spruce and Tasmanian blackwood in a versatile body design that exudes volume.

More and more players who’ve discovered Taylor's blackwood 300 Series guitars also love what they hear, thanks to the wood’s strong projection, warm and focused midrange, and top-end sparkle. “It’s got enough of mahogany’s dryness and warmth, but with splash of shimmer and overtone color giving it a special something extra,” says Andy Powers, Master Guitar Designer for Taylor Guitars.

For the 300 Series 314ce Special Edition Grand Auditorium, Powers swapped the mahogany top normally paired with blackwood for Lutz spruce. Its properties lend a dynamic boost to the overall acoustic output. “In addition to blackwood, Lutz is another wood that’s become one of my favorites," he said. “The quality of the material we’re using, the way it’s cut — it’s a spectacular top wood. It has all the qualities I’ve loved about old Adirondack spruce without being too stiff or dense.” Pairing the two woods on this guitar translates into a tone profile that sits in a musical sweet spot. “Both of these woods live in the middle of the tonal spectrum, which gives a guitar made from them a really engaging personality,” he said. “You put those ingredients together and they sound super appealing to almost every type of playing style."

Featured appointments of the 300 Series 314ce Special Edition Grand Auditorium acoustic-electric include faux tortoiseshell for the binding, rosette and pickguard, the return of Taylor's “Twisted Ovals” fretboard inlay scheme (used on the 600 Series for several years prior to 2015), and vibrant abalone bridge pin dots that add a pop of color against the ebony bridge. And, it comes with a nice hardshell case.

Body Shape
A Taylor original, the Grand Auditorium helped establish the Taylor acoustic sound. The popular body style makes for a versatile guitar that yields ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacts to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear, balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the GA is an excellent choice.

Tonewood Pairing
A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Lutz spruce is a naturally occuring hybrid of Sitka and white spruce. Sitka is the most prevalent guitar top wood of the modern era because it blends stiffness and elasticity in just the right proportions which translates into broad dynamic range with crisp articulation. Lutz spruce takes these attributes and blends them with those of white and Englemann spruce, with an end result resembling old Adirondack spruce. When combined with Taylor's bracing architecture, guitars are more powerful, richer and louder than before. Tonally, blackwood behaves somewhere in the middle of rosewood and mahogany, with a little extra shimmer and chime that shows its family resemblance to koa. Pairing blackwood with the mahogany top not only gives you that roll-in effect associated with a mahogany top - really smooth attack and balance - but extra complexity as the note decays. It's a great combination.

Electronics
Taylor's ES2 is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the-saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before. Together with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. The Taylor Expression System 2 operates through a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment and easy-to-use volume, bass and treble controls.

Other Features
Lutz spruce top, faus tortoise binding, pickguard and rosette, Italian acrylic "Twisted Ovals" fretboard inlays, gold hardware.
