This is easily one of the best mouthpieces I've every played! I've used different Vandoren models in the past (M15, M13 Lyre) and have found them to be great overall, but the Black Diamond has it all. First, the tone: if you're looking for a dark, centered tone, look no further. The BD5 is rich and smooth sounding, but not stuffy. The tone stays focused and centered and does not go thin or muffled in any registers. The altissimo is where it really shines! Forget those harsh, shrill highs; the BD5 lets the high notes sing while still retaining a darkness that I haven't found elsewhere. There's also a very apparent smoothness and fluidity throughout the entire range of the instrument. I haven't experienced a mouthpiece that allows such easy jumps between registers while maintaining such control. Articulation is eased and unencumbered as well. Staccatos still maintain their crispness but much less work is needed for rapid tonguing. This mouthpiece is probably best suited for orchestral or chamber music. The only negative I would mention is projection is not nearly as powerful as, say, an M15. I think, for the price, you can't go wrong with the BD5. It stands up to high-end, hand made mouthpieces. For the record, I use Gonzalez FOF reeds, 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 strength with the 13 series (440 pitch) BD5. They pair wonderfully.

I now own one of each of every clarinet mouthpiece Vandoren makes. It's hard to critique them because it all depends on the mouthpiece you happen to receive. I did not like the BD5 I was sent. All in all I would recommend skipping all the Vandoren mouthpieces except the CL4, CL5 & CL6. The CL5 I recently purchased is miles ahead of the rest. I have not tried a CL4 or a CL6, but if they are anything like the CL5, you will be pleased.

Wonderful mouthpiece

Comments about Vandoren BD5 Black Diamond 13 Series Ebonite Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece:

Have been playing classical for 60+ years. I have other custom mouthpieces that cannot compare to the BD5. My Patricola "C" clarinet now plays very well in tune with the BD5 13 series. I use V12 31/2 strength reeds with Chadash barrels on my R-13 B-flat and A clarinets. To disagree with another reviewer--once my clarinets warm up the BD5 will not play flat.

Comments about Vandoren BD5 Black Diamond 13 Series Ebonite Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece:

This is a great mouthpiece for it can fill an entire room with much sound. Also, it is great to play with a piece which requires much exageration of dynamics. For instance, it helps when playing piano for one can clearly hear it and it makes a great difference between f, mf, p, and pp. In addition, keep in mind that if you useare accustomed to playing in a small mouth piece you will have to use a lot more air when playing with the "Black Diamond" mouthpiece.

Great mouthpiece

Comments about Vandoren BD5 Black Diamond 13 Series Ebonite Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece:

This is a beautiful piece, very smooth note connection, gorgeous dark sound. One warning: the 13 Series plays a little flatter and I found the throat tones to be flat with my 65+ barrel ... I'd recommend 65 or 64 barrel for 440, and you might have better intonation luck. Or try the traditional non-13 Series equivalent.

Comments about Vandoren BD5 Black Diamond 13 Series Ebonite Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece:

For the last several years, I had been playing on a moderately expensive custom mouthpiece which recently stopped performing as well as it had in the past. Last fall I drove to the VanDoren studio in Chicago and tried out a number of mouthpieces. I settled on a BD 5 because it was much more responsive than my old one (and several other VanDoren models I tried). I also figured it would be much easier to replace than my custom mouthpiece in case something happened to it since these are relatively consistent. I ordered a second BD 5 from WWBW and found that it was not quite as responsive and did not blow as easily as my original one. I sent this mouthpiece back to WWBW and received a replacement in short order. This one was much more to my liking and I am keeping it both as a spare and for use in smaller groups because it has a slightly more mellow sound. I use VanDoren V12's (3.5) exclusively, which I also purchase from WWBW and these work fine with both mouthpieces.

Comments about Vandoren BD5 Black Diamond 13 Series Ebonite Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece:

Mouthpieces are a very personal part of our instruments and fit everyone differently due to all the obvious reasons. The BD5 fits my horn perfectly. There is very little resistance from top to bottom, wonderful intonation and an incredibly warm sound. However, if you are in the market try before you buy. WWBW has a great return policy

Comments about Vandoren BD5 Black Diamond 13 Series Ebonite Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece:

I'm auditioning to be a music major, so I was looking around for the best mouthpiece I could find. And boy did I find it! I used to play on a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece and was searching for an upgrade. As soon as I went to play my first note on the Black Diamond I could hear a significant improvement. There is little to no resistance, the notes speak much more clearly and the richness and darkness of my tone is much better! It's worth every penny - you will notice an amazing improvement just as I did!
